Best Deal for smaller amounts of lye

I did a search, but can't find this as a recent topic. I am wondering where you get your best deal on smaller amounts of lye. I have always just bought whatever 2 pound containers were the least expensive from Amazon, because I just make soap for our family and to give as gifts. Our family has...

    Rebatch with oil

I have a batch of soap that is lye heavy. How do I know how much oil to add with a rebatch? Are there any tricks to rebatching, other than shredding and melting?

    Why is it brittle?

I made a batch of soap with the following recipe because I wanted to use up some different oils I had on hand. 12.3 oz. coconut oil 10 oz, lard 10 oz. olive oil 3.7 oz. grapeseed oil 3.2 oz. cocoa butter .8 oz. swt. almond oil 16 oz. water 6.68 oz. lye 1 oz. lemongrass EO It was a CP soap...

    Anise oil or oil infusion?

I have 2 questions about scenting HP soap with anise. First, is it a scent that will stick all by itself? And secondly, am I better off to use anise EO, or is crushing the entire star anise and making an oil infusion better/equally good? Does any one have experience with this? Thanks!

    Rose Oil

My friend really wants me to make a batch of soap with rose oil. Other than the fact rose oil is incredibly expensive, is this even doable? Is it an oil that will survive the heating process (I do cp soap) and still leave a decent scent? And lastly, assuming people actually do this, does anyone...

    Rose EO in CP soap

My friend really wants me to make a batch of soap for her with rose essential oil. Has anyone done this? I don’t want to use such an expensive oil just to find out it doesn’t stick.

    Summer shipping

Will it hurt CP soap to be shipped through the mail in the hot summer?

    Lye Ash

Are there some ingredients or conditions that make a soap more likely to develop lye ash?

    Why the brittle edges?

I made a batch of soap that I’ve made successfully several times, but this time I wanted to keep if from gelling, so I set it on my front porch immediately after putting it in the molds. It was 33 degrees and damp out. I was using Pringles cans for molds, which I also frequently do. When I cut...

    Too Hot

I remember now reading that goats milk soap can get too hot and crack, but unfortunately I forgot that and tucked mine in tightly. If it looks like this in the mold, does that mean it’s going to be brittle when I cut it?

    Zap testing for lye

I made a batch of soap that ended up with small white spots. After reading a lot of posts about this, I decided I should probably zap test it with my tongue to make sure it wasn't undissolved lye. I gave it a pretty respectable test in an area with 3 of the little spots, but nothing happened...

    First try with fragrance oil

My son-in-law really, really wants me to make him grape scented soap. I bought a grape fragrance oil, and my house already smells like a grape jelly factory, and I haven't even opened the bottle! This is my first batch of soap with a fragrance oil. Do they always smell pretty intense? I plan on...

    Cinnamon-infused water?

I boiled a pan of water with cinnamon sticks in it to give the house a cozy, fall smell. Now I have a nice sized batch of cinnamon-infused water left over, and I wondered if there's any reason I couldn't add that to my NaOH to make soap?

    Budget-Friendly Scent Suggestions

I just make soap to share with my family and for gift-giving. I like to add a nice scent to them, but so far I have used EO's that really jack up the cost of my soaps. I would love any suggestions for some more frugal scenting?

    Double Honey

So if I was making a batch of soap and accidentally put in 2 tsp. of honey rather than the 1tsp. that the recipe called for, what is likely to be the result? Anything bad? This is the recipe, from Soaping 101: 2 oz. cocoa butter 16 oz. soybean oil 1 oz. olive oil 4.7 oz. water 2.4 oz lye 1...

    Your favorite immersion blender?

I am in the market for an immersion blender. I did a search of older posts, but the most recent I can find on the subject is 2013, so there are probably many new options. Would anyone want to share if they have a particular favorite, and maybe how long it has been working for you? Thanks!

    Hello from Iowa!

I'm Jeannie; mom to 6, grandma to 4, part-time librarian, and full-time home schooler. I'm new to making soap. I made one batch each of HP and CP from a recipe I worked out on a soap calculator. They both worked awesome and I thought I was a soap making genius, THEN I had a batch that failed...

    Soap Wouldn't Trace

I made a batch of soap last night that would not come to trace. The only thing different from the last 2 batches I made was that I noticed my lye was clumpy, like moisture had gotten to it. (I live in very humid Iowa) Could that have caused my problem? Can I still use that container of lye...

    First Batch - hot process

I did my first ever batch of soap yesterday. I did the crock pot method, and now I am second guessing myself all over the place. I did the tongue test and did not get zapped, but would a person know if their soap had too high of pH? Does HP soap continue to neutralize while it's curing?
