Dead Sea mud discolouration in cp soap

I really love Dead Sea mud in cp soap and I'm very happy with how this soap turned out but the weird green colouration on the top is a mystery. It happened once before using D S mud and I was able to wash it off with some scrubbing, but I wonder what is causing it. Could it be the alcohol I...

Lotion bar with avocado oil. Icky colour

Made a couple of lotion bars a few days ago and just love them. 2 oz. Coconut oil, 2 oz cocoa butter and somewhat less beeswax plus a bit of bit. Vitamin E oil. Coloured one with a bit of alkanet root powder infused in oil, left the other plain, added some FO and they are wonderful. Wanted to...

I have been waiting for this moment!

Oil of Olay bottle finally empty! Yahoo! So, today I tried making a moisturizer for daily use on my 66 (barely) year old skin. I was aiming for non-pore clogging, as un-greasy as as possible, small (1 4 oz. jar) batch, just for me. The end result was pretty, filled 1 1/2 4 oz. jars, probably...

    Preventing gel -confused!

So, I'm on my 14th batch of soap and having pretty good success. The last few batches I have wanted to prevent gel so I have been putting my mold in the freezer for @4 hours then moving to the fridge overnight, then removing from the fridge and letting sit for about 6 hours, then unmolding and...

Taking temperature of soap in mold....any point?

I'm quite enamoured of my little temperature gun. Took the temp of a coffee soap I just made when I poured it into the (loaf) mold. 71F in the center of the top. A little less on the ends and sides. 3 1/2 hrs later, 74F. 3 hours after that, 80F. Does this tell me anything useful? I've had...

    Goats milk soap

I'm making my first batch of goats milk soap. Put the wood loaf mold into the freezer to cool then poured soap in when it was ready, then back in freezer. How long should I leave it there? Then what do I do to keep it cool? Don't want the milk to burn. Looks good so far. It's been in the freezer...

I want to make an oatmeal soap but am having a difficult time finding info about how much oatmeal to add. I want to use one of my usual basic recipes. Makes a 3 pound loaf. I've seen every thing from 2 tbsp to 1 cup. Help!

    Weirdness in colour and texture

So, I made soap yesterday and got this weird result...... I've just started playing with micas and the last one I made had a little bit of a similar result but not quite so bad. This is a pretty basic lard/co/oo/castor oil and almond oil recipe that I have made a number of times with good...

Can I unmold and cut if still getting zapped?

So, I made a lovely batch of soap yesterday. Finished about 2:30 in the afternoon. It's now 4:30 the next day. It is lovely and firm and I'm dying to unmold and cut, so I just did a zap test and, I got zapped! ( first time ever, so now I know what it means). The temperature gun shows the top of...

    2nd batch at 4 weeks - a bit drying?

My second batch of soap is now 4 weeks old so I was very excited to try it out today. It lathered beautifully, seems suitably hard and smells divine but seemed a bit drying on my face and slightly stung my eyes. This is the recipe: 55% lard 20% OO 20% CO 5% castor oil Rose garden fo The...

If I use vanilla FO in the black part (activated charcoal) of a black and white swirled soap will it turn the black part brown and will it affect the white?

    Eek! What to do?

2 1/2 hours in and my soap is going very dark in the middle. Almost black. It's also quite warm. What should I do? Is it ok?

Just can't stay away from my soap!

OK. 5th ever batch coming up and I'm loving it (so far - it's not even two hours old). It's a two colour in the pot swirl using charcoal and cocoa and bay rum fragrance. Looks and smells stunning so far but I have previously experienced cracking (too hot I guess - was able to smooth over and...

    Colourant recommendations

I'm about to order some supplies after unmolding my 4th batch. Just having so much fun! All is going pretty well and I want to start playing with colour. I'm going to order some micas, oxides etc. and wondered if anyone might have suggestions for a basic palette to begin with, of stuff that...

to gel or not to gel and to heat or not to heat

OK. So I have to throw my first batch out. As a painter I know that everything is rehearsal so I'm ok with that. The next will be better. I do like to study up though and in reading through post after post, I have two big questions that come up that I really can't figure out the answers to...
