Just got through making my first soap!!

Congatulations ---Soapmaking is very addictive. You may begin to crave oils that last week you did not know existed. The way you begin to look at the cooking oils at the grocery store will make the other shoppers give you wide berth. Enjoy! :!:

    question of scent duration

re: carebear. Lemon eucalyptus said "tongue in cheek". Sorry I was not clear on that. It just smells "citrus"---sort of.. I have noticed, that people purchase soap on scent and little else--unless they know the soap. A nice smelling bar will keep them coming back as long as they like the...

    question of scent duration

I think I'm going to try Brambleberry for FO. I will still have to use EOs for some of the folks who buy my soap. They don't want "unnatural stuff" in their soap. Thanks Carebear! I have just made a shea butter soap with lemon eucalyptus EO. Now that's nice and the scent holds better...

    question of scent duration

I use pure EOs. Not to sound completely thick too late)- but when you say 0.5%, 1% etc do you mean tbe eo should be counted as a % of the oils or part of the oils for a total of 100%? I have to date added the EOs to the completed batch at trace not counting the tablespoon or two (I have been...

    question of scent duration

Is the reason that many recomend EOs be used at 0.7-2 flOZ PPO to ensure that enough scent is left after cure? When I started making soap over a year ago I started off with ggts of EO with unsat results even after a few days of making, I now use more but am afraid of the smell being...

Bizarre Lab Color Soap! What did I do wrong?

Just thinking, would the gelling of the center affect the color?

    dumb thing

I made a base vegetable oil soap (CP) with peppermint and rosemary EOs. The color was unappealing to me so I hand milled it and added ----ground rosemary and green-tea infusion. When melting the soap, my crock pot proved to be to warm so I had some brown bits in it. I decided to leave them in...

    Amount of water

IMHO run the recipe through SoapCalc to ensure correct amount of lye to the type of oils you are planning to use. You may want to change the percentage of water to 30% The default on SoapCalc is 38%. See how that compares to your recipe. Have fun! http://www.soapcalc.net/default.asp

    Wooden molds

I made mine from ash obtained at a pallet mfg co.s waste. Love it, but have tried no other wooden molds either. PCV pipe is ok as long as I line it with freezer paper. In either case, lining the molds is my least favorite part of the whole soap making process.

    Which cutter?

Kinda makes my fish line with a plastic miter box look primative. Gotta be a cheaper way to put one of those bad boys together with stuff around the house..I'll let you know. I'll call it the "Frugal Master Bar Slice" I'm thinking hydraulics here. Won't Rube Goldberg be proud.

    Powder or liquid goat milk???????

When reading about soap making-before I ever did- Storey Bulletins gave instructions on making goat milk soap that used the process of placing the container containing the milk into an ice water bath then slowly adding the lye while monitoring the temperature to ensure the lye/milk mixture...

    Dumb scale anyway

O.K. That's "alotta" scales! Ya gotta love it  Thanks for the website. so far so good on the soap. It's unmolded, cut and passes the "zap" test. I would just hate to have had to discard the ingredients...ya know what I mean?

    Dumb scale anyway

So today I'm making a new recipe I created, and part way through measuring oils, my scale starts to act up. I get an ERR, then when I take the pan off the scale, it shows a weight.............. AND, today, I had to decide to be clever because I was in a slight hurry and combined several of my...

    spoons

Thank you for your kind words. I scrounge for hardwood pallets for the wood. It's amazing what goes to the landfill. I use chisels, gouges, sometimes a Dremel, scroll saw and lots and lots of sandpaper. The finish is mineral oil--it doesn't go rancid! I have tried walnut oil, but...

Adding infused aniseeds to lye water?

so, after curing and storage, how did the scent hold up? How was the soap to use? Interesting experiment.

    zap test

Nearly everyone I know has touched their tongue to a 9V battery.....perhaps I should enlarge the circle of people I know  I learned just recently that touching one's tongue to a bar of soap actually had a name.

    Hello from the UK

After reading many sources, I created recipes using the SoapCalc lye calculator. So far, olive oil, coconut base, some with veg shortening some with smaller amounts of castor, grapeseed, soy, sunflower and some including honey with oats. All have been successful so far.
