I want one of the 'For Crafts Sake' cutters.

Do you think there is a big difference in longevity between any of these cutters?

They all look like the same basic design...just wood is replaced with aluminum along the way...I just don't want to buy another cutter ever if I don't have to :D But it would also be quite nice to store it on its edge or in a drawer, etc.

I should add, that if I should ever be able to get my hands on the mold in my other thread, my loaves will never be longer than 8"...

the difference between the hobby grade and the advanced/commercial is essentially that with the advanced/commercial you can have part of your log hanging out the end. not an issue if you don't make logs longer than the cutter - but if you do you would need to cut your log in half (or whatever) if you get a hobby grade.

Also, the versions made of (or mostly of) aluminum will be lighter in weight, than the oak models, if that's an issue. And the open ended design of the commercial versions handle puts the force directly over the log, whereas the hobby models put the force on the outside of the frame. Personally I would feel more in control of the process if I were exerting force directly above the target, but your preferences may be different.

as soon as our taxes come back I've got my eye on one of the cutters too, I just can't decide which one.... I'm leaning toward one of the hobby grade ones though

My DH for last Valentines day got me a Tank. I love it. But I have only got to use it twice myself because my DH beats me to it , he also likes it very well :D

I ordered the commercial grade one, it will be delivered on Monday.

I cannot wait. I'll be sitting on the front steps all day waiting for the UPS man to get here.

Oh do share pics when it arrives!!! There is a youtube video of a guy cutting with his Tank...I could watch it over and over. Its very lulling and 'satisfying' watching all of those perfectly cut bars of soap pile up so quickly!

I hope I don't wish I had just spent the extra and gotten the Tank...the only thing unappealing about the commercial grades were having to reach in to grab the bars...it looked a little awkward for my youtube guy. With the hobby grade, they will just be sitting there waiting for me to scoop them up  ...

Kinda makes my fish line with a plastic miter box look primative. Gotta be a cheaper way to put one of those bad boys together with stuff around the house..I'll let you know. I'll call it the "Frugal Master Bar Slice" I'm thinking hydraulics here. Won't Rube Goldberg be proud.

Wasn't it? So much easier than the "one slice at a time with a knife" method I've been using. lol
