Substitutes for tallow and vegetable shortening?

I have a soap making book that uses a lot of tallow and vegetable shortening in its recipes. Are there substitutes for these oils?

palm oil

yep pretty much (after recalculating the lye, of course)

BUT rather than finding a substitute, another alternative is to reformulate using what oils you wish to get the result you are looking for.
