I have been making soap for over ten yrs, maybe longer for my own personal use. I also give to friends and family. I do not use preservatives and have soap from two or three years ago which I still use, I keep seeing the word"rancid". My soap smells fine, my hubby is very very particular and has never complained..question is...is it rancid and we just don't know it?

If it was rancid, you would know it. Soap doesn't just go rancid because its old, I have a bar thats over 25 years and its just fine.

So what makes it go rancid and why the. Do they put preservatives in them?

No, you don't put preservative in soap. I really couldn't tell you what makes them go rancid besides using oils with a short shelf life. The only time I've had issues is when I used soy oil, it can be prone to DOS.
How its stored can affect it to, keeping it dry and in the dark seems to help it last longer. Its nothing I worry about unless you have a recipe that consistently goes bad.
