Hi,

the father of a friend of mine regularly spends time in Ghana (I think) helping out, and asked if I could come up with a recipe that would be easy to produce locally, with a distinct lack of specialised equipment like electronic scales.

The big obstacle being lack of sodium hydroxide or potatssium hydroxide in purified form. So, we're looking at leeching ashes.

I have asked what oils might be easily available, as a starting point.

Anyone got any idea's or suggestions on how to best tackle this? As close to a 'recipe' as possible is the ultimate goal, but I can probably come up with something with suggestions. Would a variant of pioneer soap work, do you think? (Assuming tallow and lard are not available).

suggest he ask the locals

yeah he's checking on the available oils with the locals.

They definitely have shea - he knows that for certain.

What that village doesn't have is a soapmaker. Thats why they want advice.
