I used Australian red reef clay in may last soap- I sed just a little bit for a swirl. All I have to say is - don't use this thing in soap. This clay will stain everything even if you use a little bit...ugh...I think I will have to toss it...nobody from my family would want staining soap.
 
I use it, but very small amounts like you said. It does leave some color on the wash cloth but it rinses away.

Overdo it, though, and you have what I like to call REDRUM soap...
 
I use it for a swirl also. Madder root too and they both do leave color.
But they're such nice natural colors that I continue to use them and just warn people.
Just keep it in a soap dish! :)
 
I've used pink Kaolin clay and it doesn't stain at all. Of course, it's not a deep red, but it is quite a rich mauve color and looks pretty in swirls.
