My husband is a very green thinker. I am not as green as I know I should/could be.

You know how it is when something just kinda hits you? When a light bulb goes off?

Last night we had casserole for dinner & ate about 1/2 of it. Well, we forgot to place it in the fridge last night so it went in the trash this morning. I was like... "Oh well, it was only worth a couple bucks." Then it hit me, we were also throwing away the energy it took to produce/grow the food & package the food, as well as the gas to transport the food to the store, etc, etc.

It's just odd when a light bulb goes off & you wonder why did I no think about the 10 years ago?

We throw away a terrible amount of food here too. Mostly the fresh fruits/vegetables that I never got around to cooking. I am slowly getting better about it by just buying less - I'm trying to buy only what I'm going to use for that day as far as fresh things go. And getting to know what just doesn't get eaten helps. (apples!!! we just never eat them, they always go to waste! clementines/mandarins, on the other hand, get eaten very quickly.)

If vegetables were $10 per pound and meat was $40 then we probably wouldn't throw out much.

On a historical basis, food is currently *ridiculously* cheap. Think back to history class........ do you think there was ever another period in human history when obesity was an epidemic?
And when things are cheap, they aren't appreciated.

Not odd at all - there's a name for it - Illumination... I love it, rely on it for every decision.

I never throw anything useful out if I can .... I always eat my girls leftovers when she is full..... crap call it thrifty, I even wash out ziplock bags and reuse them if they arent really nasty lol...

that being said, there is sometimes a tomato that hides in the back of my fridge and isnt included in an awesome meal before it gets nasty.. then i must throw it out.. which sucks.. I cant wait to have some space, land, a garden... cause then everything will go in the composter, recycle everything I can, then your really not throwing out too much trash... :)

 Our appartment block has 2 underground containers that work with a cart system, we pay €1 for every full garbage back at the end of each year.
That forces you to think about what you buy and throw away...
Plastic, textile, colored glass, white glass and paper/cardboard are all collected seperately over here.

After we've moved to a house with garden there'll be a couple of chickens and a worm bin.

:D As a child, we always had a couple of chickens. Really helps getting rid of a lot of stuff you'd usually just throw away and you get te best eggs and cosy sounds in return :p

exactly... ahhhh I cant wait.. I always had friends with farms, but never really lived on one myself, but they were only a walk away :)...

I miss having all the fresh veggies, fruits, and eggs I could find...

My hubby wants to raise chickens, but with all the howling coyote packs, mountain lion tracks as big as an open hand, and hawks around here, I am not too keen on setting ourselves up for heartbreak.

We compost, although we still have to build a proper bin for it. And we are putting in a garden so we don't have to buy vegetables at the crazy prices around here.
