Solid or liquid?

When a soap recipe calls for 8oz of say coconut oil, do you measure 8oz on a scale while the coconut oil is still solid or do you melt the coconut oil first and then measure it in a measuring cup?

When I measured 8 oz. of coconut oil on a scale and then melted it, there was almost 10 oz of liquid coconut oil in the measuring cup.

You measure by weight always.

Aye, a good recipe should be in weights, not volume. Then you have a consistent reliable standard to stick to

Yup, I measure by weight, put in a bowl and eithr microwave or melt on low on the stovetop.

Even your water and NaOH should be in weights.

Yep- always by weight, not volume....especially the lye, oils and water. The only things I use volume measurements with is my scant amounts of colorants.
