So I recently created a small batch of coconut lotion and I made a mistake. I fudged the math a little bid and as a result think I added .8% liquid Germall Plus instead of .5%. Think this is going to cause any adverse reactions? Toss the batch or keep it? It's only a small batch anyway so it wouldn't be a big deal, but what do you think?

Hi taurus50,

I'm not exactly an expert in lotion making, so this is only my take, but I think you are *probably* ok to use the batch, however there could be some risk of sensitivity. The usage rate is a recommendation only meant to be used as a guide, and some more intricate formulas may actually require a *slightly* higher usage rate. However, if your recipe was already pretty basic then even at .5% you are already on the high end, and according to one source, “the higher % should be used in conjunction with high protein and complex formulations” (http://www.fromnaturewithlove.com/repri ... atives.asp). Add another .3% to that….? Here is a link to the msds for Germall Plus and maybe it will have some info that will help you determine if you want to use the lotion or not.

Cheers,

You can make another batch and add .3% preservative then combine the batches. That's what I do when I really don't want to toss out a batch!
