How’d the render go?
I have finally dug out my toaster pan amidst the rubble of holiday storage. I have yet to render. 🙁 things have been a bit nuts with holidaze, Covid family members, death cleaning and closing out the books for the year. I just purged my soap room and am prepared to start the new year’s work. Will post as soon as I get it done. So far behindddddd

I started a batch. Hardly made a dent in the bag. I think there’s still like 30 pounds in there 😳 and I only have 4 - 8 lb buckets to store it. During my purging I didn’t think to keep all the pails I’ve been collecting the last dozen years. Oh well, I suppose there’s gonna be a ton of tallow soap, tallow balm and whatever else this year!

I don’t know how much I started with and my scale doesn’t weigh more than 7lbs. I need a bigger one but these are pails from coconut and palm oils.

this was so satisfying!

I love it!! 😍 And yes, it is so satisfying! Every time I render lard or tallow, my husband asks me, "How much would that have cost to buy it at the store?" The last time I looked, our local restaurant supply did not have tallow at all, and their lard had gone from $48 for a 50lb cube, to $109 for the same cube. YIKES.

Also, my chickens loved the cracklins, which I kept in a bag in the fridge. I would warm up a bowl to take out to them in the mornings. They pecked it all right up, and then wiped their beaks on the grass to get rid of the grease. Hilarious!

EDIT: how did you like using the roaster pan instead of inside on the stove?

@AliOop, I’ve never purchased tallow (although did pay for our part of this cow) but have checked out prices at other suppliers. It’s crazy to see how pricey it is!

I don’t know what to do with the cracklins. I just put them in the fridge for now. No one I know has chickens at the moment. That is so funny your chickens wiped their beaks 😂

i loved using the roaster pan!! It was so much easier than the stove and oven. I almost donated this pan last year because it was just taking up space but now I’m glad to have kept it. Thank you so much for the idea!
