I'm trying to fill out EIN form for new business. One of the questions is "What does your business do?" Should I put manufacturing because I'm making a product? Or retail because I'm selling a product? Any advice will be great. Thank you.

Hi, Ira, what are you making/selling? How do you plan on selling the merchandise (online, stores, craft fairs)? If you chose manufacturing, then you might run into a bunch of problems with inspections and zoning, especially if you're making stuff at home. That is, if you plan on getting your tax ID as well.

I'm going to make and sell soaps in the beginning. Making them at home and sell them via online and craft fairs. I registered my business as LLC.

I agree with Koshka. Listing my business as manufacturing will create a lot of problems. That's probably why my SBA consultant suggested to list as retail.

Does anyone else have any advice?
