lye is a combination of caustic soda and water right?

why do i see some of the post here says that you need to combine lye with water?

sorry im new.. just needed some clarifications

many thanks. :)

'Lye' gets used kind of loosely. Yes, it refers to the mixture of sodium hydroxide and water, but many people will also refer to the sodium hydroxide itself as lye. Clear as mud?

Hang in there, you'll get it figured. You're doing the right thing by asking questions if you don't understand something!

lye is sodium hydroxide -in it's raw form it's a solid - typically sold as a solid material (granules or flakes) and this is how it's assumed to be in soap making recipes (98-100% pure. You can get it as a liquid but then it's already diluted. don't use this because it's complicated figuring out your formulas.

you dissolve your lye (sodium hydroxide particles) in water.

in soapmaking most of us assume you know to dissolve the lye in water so may say "add your lye to your oils" but we SHOULD say "add your lye SOLUTION" to your oils.
