Hi, I am new here and happy to find all of you. I am in the soap making business by accident. Funny, I know. We do work in a closed country. We have some goats and needed to show the government that we make money from them. I mentioned making soap and boom, here I am trying to figure all of this out. They are thrilled that this is happening but I am scared to death for I have no clue what I am doing. The reason for being scared? If the government catches on that I do not know what I am doing and if I goof, I could be kicked out of the country. (no pressure, I know) So far so good, even when I goofed on measureing the lye and it came out a cream instead of soap. when the officials were there I mentiioned it was a new product of soap cream. Whew!! The milk is dried up right now till spring but need to work on a better recipe. Is it possible to make soap from powdered pasturised milk? Any recipes would be of great help. I have my oils of Coconut, palm, olive, sweet almond, castor, grapeseed. I have been using a recipe for just goat milk and cocnut and lard. I want to improve it for dryer skin and by what I read, coconut will seem to dry out the skin. Any recipes using the oils above that I may use. I do thank you for allowing me to introduce myself from this location.

Hello and welcome from Australia! You will find a lot of great information and advice here. Try using the search button at the top right of each page. You can type in a keyword or words and read what others have to say. Otherwise you can go to the bottom right of the soap forum first page and read all the pages......that's how I learned so much even before I started making cold process (CP) soap. This site is awesome for beginners:-

http://www.soap-making-essentials.com/

Another excellent resource online is all the lye calculators available to you for free. MMS and Soapcalc9 are excellent:-

http://www.thesage.com/calcs/lyecalc2.php

http://www.soapcalc.com/default.asp

Another good idea is to download the soapmaker programme which includes its own lye calculator and soap properties graph - you can have a free 30 day trial with lots of help from:- http://www.soapmaker.ca/

This is good as you can track your ingredient inventory and also finished product inventory.

HTH!

Tanya :)

Wow! Nothing like pressure to motivate you!

You can replace all of the water in a recipe with milk, and the only real difference is that if you don't want to the heat from the lye to turn your soap orange or brown, you soap at cooler temperatures.

And yes, you can also use powdered milk.

I find that if I hot process my milk soaps, not paying attention to temps at all, that even though the lye milk turns orange, my final product is a light tannish or off-white color. :) However, there is no functional difference of the brownish soap:)

But it looks like you were already given some links to get your started, so I'll just say hello :)

Which country are you in?
