Using oil for soap that was already used for food?

I would be concerned about oxidation. Oils that have been heated to a high temperature often are oxidized which leads to faster spoiling. I would be concerned that using recycled oil would lead to DOS. I think a a better option would be making biodiesel. Biodiesel is made with vegetable oils...

    Thyme Essential Oil

Apparently the chemical thymol can by used at a rate of .5% and it acts as a catalyst of sopanification. Thymol is found in Thyme Essential Oil. Has anyone used Thyme EO or Thymol crystals in soap making? I would love to here your experiences.

What kind of water do you soap with?

I was hoping the wine would impart a nice red color but it was a deep brown color. The advantages of wine is the color and the sugars increase the lather of the bar. If you use wine make sure you boil it and cool it down possibly even freeze it. Alcohol won't behave nicely with lye and soap. It...

Cold Process Soap for the base of other products

I am interested in what other things cold process soap can be used as an ingredient in. For example, cold process laundry soap. I made some the other day and I quite enjoyed making it. I then realized I could probably use it as a scouring powder as well. Then I read somewhere you can use castle...

Ideas for storing soap that needs to cure

I have some cooling racks I use. I put them on the shelf in my coat closet and leave them for a month or so. Even with my bathroom being next to the closet they still seem to cute.

    Questions about using palm oil

I have never melted it completely and stirred it before taking some out. Its soft enough to scoop out so I just scoop, weigh, then melt. Haven't had any problems with this, I also superfat a little bit higher typically. I like 6-7% because anything below that dries my skin out regardless of the...

    Laundry Soap

I'm suspecting the citric acid may neutralize the washing soda and may lower the efficiency. However, I have no scientific evidence to back that up. Let us know how it works.

    Laundry Soap

Wal-mart here doesn't seem to carry coconut oil. The only place that I have found it charges 18 dollars a pound for it so I use it very sparingly. The reason I want to use it in laundry soap is the exact reasons you mention, the cleansing factor. I recently ordered 10lbs of palm online and I...

    Laundry Soap

I made laundry soap the other day for the first time as well, I have used it a few times and it seems to do okay with general cleaning. I made a batch of lard soap (100% lard 0% SF) Then I used a cup of lard soap shredded 1 cup borax 1 cup Calgon Water Softner (similar to washing soda, I am...

What inspired you to start soap making?

I had taken some sleeping pills before bed and they give me terrible dreams. I had a dream about making soap and I couldn't ever shake the feeling after that and just had to do it.

Anyone use Aloe Vera and goats milk in CP..

I have used aloe vera juice in my soaps. I can't really say if it added anything to the soap. I think its more for label appeal than anything. I have used coconut milk in soaps before and I can say that the soap has a more creamy texture to it. I have goat milks powder I am dying to try out.
