    EO shelf life

I recently discarded several of my EO's that I thought were no longer good. I kept a few that I liked, but I'm not sure if they are still good. I have rosemary oil that I purchased in 2009. The bottle lists it as having a one year expiration, but I find that to be very short. It is stored in...

    shampoo bar

I have been searching for a good shampoo bar recipe for the longest time. I want something good that won't need an acidic rinse after, but one that treats tangles as well. Any suggestions?

    I'm such an idiot!

So I made my lye yesterday morning then I mixed my oils in the afternoon and I let them sit for the day. Last night I was ready to make my soap but the oils seemed a bit cloudy, as if they might start to slowly be getting hard, so I warmed my oils slightly then I had to warm my lye slightly...

    coagulated OO

I keep my OO in my very cold garage. I want to make a batch of soap but the OO is coagulated. Would it be okay to weigh out the thickened oil and then heat it to liquify?

    zap test

i know that if your soap is not ready or is lye heavy the zap test will produce a "zap" similar to what would happen if you put your tongue on a 9V battery. since i never put my tongue on a 9V battery i can only imagine what that would feel like. i made a batch of bastille (90% OO 10% Castor)...

    iPhone app

I wish someone would create a soap calculator app already; that way I could create receipes at my whim, when in the car, picking up my kids, or waiting in line at the grocery store.

    lye into water

i have been making soap for a while now and i know you should always pour your weighed lye into water and not the other way around but why? i always have a little lye left at the bottom of my jar and i usually have to pour a little lye solution into the jar in order to loosen up the lye and then...

    DOS

what are some of the factors that can cause DOS? I haven't had this problem yet but I want to try a bunch of new receipes and I don't want to do something that is known to cause this. I plan on making some high OO and low CO receipes, my skin is very dry and I'm looking for moisture with...

    looking for bath bomb tutorial

i am looking for a previous post on making bath bombs that included a link to a website that showed a tutorial on making bath bombs. i am not interested in the tutorial from coastal scents. does anyone know where this thread is or what website has a good tutorial for a basic bath bomb, not...

    shampoo soap

i am going to get my hair straightened using the Brazilian method which i believe uses keratin. after this treatment you cannot use hair products which have sulfates in them. sulfate free shampoo and conditioner are expensive. i would like to make shampoo soap which i haven't tried yet. i...

    castor vs. coconut

i know coconut can be drying but it is necessary for bubbles. i know castor is used for bubbles but doesn't have some of the same properties as coconut (according to soapcalc) what is everyone's preference and why?

    corn oil

has anyone used corn oil in their soaps? if so what are the benefits associated with this oil? i have never read about using corn oil before but i see it listed in soapcalc and it had me thinking, (i cook with it and have a lot in my house)

    castille soap

i want to make a 100% oo soap, but i don't know if pure olive oil is best or if i should use extra virgin oo. any ideas? are there different sap values for the different olive oils (extra virgin, etc.)? soapcalc does not list separate values, but i still wasn't sure.

    superfatting

i usually add an extra oil at light trace to superfat on top of the discount i've already taken at the beginning. could i just add the "extra" oil in the beginning when i first start to stir? isn't it essentially the same thing?

    reheating lye

i just made a batch of lye and put it outside in the 32degree cold to cool down. 2 questions: 1. can lye freeze? and 2. I normally warm lye up with a warm bath but can i quickly put it in the microwave instead?

    silly question

Hi all, I've been on the forum since April, but I haven't logged on in a while. I'm back now but I noticed that under everybodies username is a type of oil. What is this all about and how do you choose the oil that is listed? Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question.

    milk soap

I am going to be making some milk soaps using powdered milks; I've made a receipe using powdered milk before and it came out fine. I have buttermilk, goat milk, whole milk, and coconut milk, my question is: does anyone believe that any one of these milks create a better soap over another and...

i put my loaf mold in the freezer in order to unmold it. my intentions were to leave it in for 20 minutes, but i forgot about if for about 8 hours. needless to say it was frozen, ugh  when i took it out of the freezer. it has been out now for over a day but there is white streaks/swirls...

    trimmed soap pieces

i don't know what to do with all of my trimmings, i hate to throw them out, but i couldn't melt them and reuse them because there isn't enough of any one scent or color. i was wondering if i could grate them into small pieces and use them in my laundry. would that be safe, would it clean the...
