i usually add an extra oil at light trace to superfat on top of the discount i've already taken at the beginning. could i just add the "extra" oil in the beginning when i first start to stir? isn't it essentially the same thing?

Depends on the process, if you're making cold process soap then yes, you can add all of your oils up front and not mess with holding some back to add at trace. The saponification process is not even close to complete as trace and is indiscriminate, so adding your superfat oils at trace in cold process soap does not mean that's the oil that's left once saponification is complete.

Hot process is a whole 'nother story, though.
