    Well that was a failure

Very basic 40oz lard, 13.29 water and 7.06 lye. Those aren't exacti used a lye calc and don't have my notebook near me. Like I said I added the cup of baking soda at trace and it was cold process. Mold is a wood box with w towel over it, sitting near the heater hoping to help it move along.

    Well that was a failure

We use baking soda as a over all body scrub and washing our dreads so I thought it would be easier in a bar form rather than powder.

    Well that was a failure

40oz blend as usual for me only lard but I added (too much I see now) a cup of baking soda (yes im trying to make a very baking soda heavy bar, as much as i can get in it) at trace and the soap will not set. It's been about 4hrs and it's very much still liquidy. Not sure what to do with it now...

    Messed up deer tallow

Rendered on the stove 2x over. I had it sitting to cure for a month and thought it was done before wrapping it in the towel. Is there any way to know for certain it's done curing? It doesn't smell terrible now but it has a definite odor that I'm just going to keep it for us to use around the...

    Messed up deer tallow

I made lavender deer tallow soap awhile back and it sat and cured so I thought. I had wrapped it all in a towel and placed in a basket for safe keeping until I was ready to give it to people and today when I unwrapped it there were darker discoloration and it smells unpleasant...like tallow. The...

    Trial 2-deer tallow

Ive made my second batch of soap and it's very different from the first batch using lard. First being approx 20min after pouring into mold it swelled and cracked. I had not covered it as I did the original batch and it was cooler in the kitchen so maybe that had to do with it. The tallow was...

    Lard soap

Well it turned out fine I think. Removing from the molds was tricky and I lost a bit in the corners. It's been sliced and is setting up to cure and hopefully harden up. I know it's going to be softer than most but squeeze to hard and you'll leave dents. I really enjoyed the whole process and...

    Lard soap

Not hard, I put Saran wrap over it and I was able to lightly touch it without it sticking to the wrap but I could have easily pushed into it.

    Lard soap

So the turning white and firm before gel is ok? I've just read so many separation or false trace posts I'm terribly paranoid.

    Lard soap

This is my first time here so hi! I just made a batch of lard only soap and it's setting up now, but I'm concerned. It turned white and firmed fairly quickly but now the center is getting softer and darker which I guess is the term gel...but should it have turned white and firm and then gelled...
