Latex moulds

Hi all, Could someone tell me if latex moulds are ok to use ??? Has anyone made their own moulds ( silicone or latex ) and is it as easy as they say to produce your own moulds.....

My friend makes very small silicone molds for her clay jewelery making. It isn't hard, but it is very cost prohibitive for larger molds. I asked her and she paid $20 for a container that would make a large shaped bar sized soap mold.
