Round Bar with Round Center Core

I want to make a round bar with a different color round center core. My thought process is to use a 4" pipe for a mold, yes I really want it that large for our "Magnum" line, in the center of the pipe I would set a 1/2" pipe with a liner on the outside. Pour the main batter into the 4" pipe...

    Insurance

For those of you that sell and have made the choice not to have liability insurance as it's "just a hobby" and "it's soap" my agent likes to point out that as soon as you charge for your "hobby' it became a business. Also your soap may be the greatest thing since the merry-go-round, hate the...

    $$ with or without tax

This may not be in the right place. If not please feel free to move it. For those of you that sell, do you include tax in the price or do you "plus tax"? Say at $5.50 a bar, tax included, where I live that would equate to $5.09 plus $0.41 for the tax man. At $5.50 plus tax it changes to...

    Our First Show

This was our first show and although sales were dismal we learned a lot. First, don't work a show that is geared toward children's activities. Bad idea. Second, as has been said before "scent sells". Some of our bars are unscented salt bars and even after telling people they were unscented...

    Can Someone Splain

what this is? I assume separation? I've used the same recipe dozens of times, same temperature and same mold but this is a first. I did use Bay Rum FO for the first time so maybe this is the culprit. I may not have blended enough which is what I hope as i like the FO already.

    Our Labels

Well this is the label concept we are going to go with for our soaps. Rectangular for "regular" bars on a neon paper wrapper, round for our Beer Bars with a coffee filter wrapper and square for our salt bars with corrugated white cardboard wrapper. We used an ink jet printer and sprayed them...

    Sugar

I've read where sugar not only adds to the "bubble" effect in CP soaps but it also adds to the hardness of the finish bar. Is sugar enough to take the place of sodium lactate in order to add some hardness? What if you used both figuring the sugar for the bubbles and the SL for added...

    Lard & Fragrance

Don't know if it's pure coincidence or there's something to it but all my recipes that contain Lard seem to retain fragrance oil scent better than those that don't have Lard. I use Lard at 15% and the other oils and butters all vary in percentage from recipe to recipe. Sure I have others that...

    Any experience with this Company?

Has anyone any experience with this company with regard to their products? statelinebag.com I like the look of their bags and pricing looks reasonable.

    Fragrance Oil vs. Temperature

Does the temperature of the oils that you soap with have an effect on weather or not a fragrance oil "sticks"? I tend to soap between 110* - 120* and I'm wondering if I'm too hot for certain FO's.

    Kraft Paper

For those of you that wrap your finish bars in brown Kraft Paper does the fact that the paper is not acid free cause you any concern? I personally like the Kraft paper with string, or twine, or "dress up" items. Think it gives it a homespun appearance. Just wondering if the non-acid free...

    Beer Boil

I've seen posts from folks who use beer in their soap making and it looks like most people boil the beer to some extent weather it be 5 minutes, 15 minutes or until the liquid has been reduced by half. With that said just what is trying to be boiled off? With the boiling point of grain alcohol...

    Palm Oil Remelt

Last night I opened a 7# container of Palm Oil. It had been sitting about 6 months and was noticeably separated. I melted the contents completely and stirred it so everything was once again combined. After, I poured it into 4 separate but equal smaller containers. Question I have are the...

    Quick Lye Question

The last 2 batches I've done I tried using the lye concentration instead of the water content I had been. I've also added 2% sodium lactate to both of these. They both traced super fast. Second one so fast, by the time I got it to the mold it was like pouring set up jell-o. I'm guessing the...

    Alkanet Root (pic posted)

Wow. Just used an infused olive oil of Alkanet Root and the purple was amazing. Let's see what happens in a few days. The infusion rate was 2 TBS in 16 oz. of oil. Simmered for 2 hrs., strained and it's been sitting for a couple of weeks. This was also my first time adding sodium lactate at the...

    85 Year Old Bar

Picked this bar of Grandpa's Wonder Soap up this summer at the area's largest antique show. The box was in very good condition and the bar is in beautiful shape. It's a pine tar bar. Best I can ascertain it is pre 1928 as the company, Beaver Soap Company, changed names in 28' so the inscription...

    50/50 PreMix with Beer?

I have tried the 50/50 lye/water pre mix for my regular batches and like it a lot. Don't have the overheating problems. My question is can you do the same with Beer? When I soap with beer in place of water, I boil the beer and then let it set for a day uncovered in the fridge. When I mix it...

    Infused Oil

Can you infuse any oil? I want to infuse coconut oil with Spirulina and I want to make enough so I have some left for additional batches later on. Obviously I need to melt the oil and when completed it will re-solidify. Can this be stored for use later on after it's been heated? In the...

    Thinking of a Soap Garage

Now that I have your attention, the garage I have in mind is actually somewhere to "park" my batch as it gel's. My though is to use the foam type insulation that is typically used on basement walls that is say 1" thick and has the reflective foil backing. When applied to a basement wall the...

    Lard vs. Crisco

I've done a couple batches of beer soap with Lard as one of my ingredients. The remainder are castor, coconut & olive. I'm thinking of replacing the lard with Crisco and the qualities of my finished bar when run through soap calc don't change dramatically. The biggest changes look to be the...
