I'm trying my hand at a salve and I think I burnt my first infusion.

I used the crock pot method, and infused 3 cups of sweet almond oil with some calendula, lavender, and rose petals (ground up). I had the crock pot on low for 3 hours.

The herbs are all brown and the infusion smells kind of burnt. My crock pot does get hotter than most on low, but I cut the time back to three hours from 4-6 hours that I saw many websites recommend.

Is it normal for it to smell/look this way? I've strained all the herbs out of the oil now and the oil is pretty dark brown. It sizzled a little bit when I poured it over a paper towel in the strainer.... (eeek??)

Did I do this right? If not, any tips for next time?

It shouldn't smell burnt. I have tried a few times, but my crock pot gets hotter than most also, so I just mix the oil & herbs in an airtight jar & let sit for a couple weeks. It's the only way that I've had any success doing it. :?
