Looking for a simple cold process recipe

Looking through my old posts, I noticed that I made soap in 2011 and then again for the last time in 2013. I want to make it again and see that I used coconut oil, olive pomace oil and castor oil the other times. I was trying to make shampoo bars, but this time I just need it to be soap. I've...

Fluid ounces and the other kind?

I just made cold process soap for the second time, and the last time I made it was 2.5 years ago, so I don't really remember much! I just realised that I weighed the lye on the scale, and then I think all the oils in a Pyrex measuring jug on the scale as well, and I think I paid more attention...

How should I wrap my soap bars?

I'm giving some of my soap as gifts and wondered how to wrap them. Greaseproof baking paper? Or would cloth be best to absorb moisture? Some of them will be sent in September or October by surface mail to the US from here in the UK, it takes 8 weeks to ship and then will have to wait till...

Is my soap not ready? It feels like it's stripping my skin

We just tried it for the first time by washing our hands, it didn't zap my tongue, it's been curing 25 days. My husband and I both feel like our hands have been either extremely cleansed and stripped, or there's a residue left, we can't tell! Maybe it's not ready and that's something to do...

Photos of my first soap ever!

I got so much help from people here and someone asked me to post photos, so here they are right out of the mold. I don't know why there is white stuff on the top of it. It's been 3 weeks now, can I use it?? My tongue doesn't get zapped when I touch it to the soap and it tastes like soap...

How do I get my soap out of the tupperware?

It's been over 48 hours. I got the one out of the silicone bread mold because I could just pull the silicone away from the soap and pop it out, but the ones in the tupperware containers are stuck in there! What do I do?

Was my trace ok and can I reuse the cooking utensils?

I thought the trace would take 10 min but after 4 minutes, when I drizzled some mixture on the top, it pretty much stayed there and wasn't sinking in, so I quickly poured it into the moulds. Do you think it went past trace? What does that mean for my soap? Will it not turn out right? It was...

HELP! Can I use a pot with a coating to mix oils and lye?

The lye mixture and the oil mixuture are around 100 deg F and I realised the pot I was giong to mix them together in is too small! Can I use a pot that has a teflon like coating? I think that one might be big enough!!! I'm about to use a plastic tub and I hope that's ok!

What kind of coconut oil do I have??

There are 3 choices on soapcalc, fractionated, 76 degree and 92 degree. Mine is from Soap Kitchen and is called Coconut Oil, white, standard. Argh I finally got my husband out with the kids and was finally going to start this and of course this happens! I am really really hoping someone...

I'm stuck on the math!!! Help!

I got my supplies months ago and am ashamed to say I still haven't made my shampoo bars! I finally calculated the volume and amount of oils my mold holds. It's 53 oz/1502g (it's a silicone bread mold). It sounds like a lot, could that be right? Also, does that volume calculation (l x w x h...

    Silicone mold and superfat questions

    1. I was reading the sticky about how much oil perm mold and all that math is making me feel sick to my stomach. Would it be dumb, for my first batch ever, to just get a bunch of molds out (tupperware, silicone...) and pour till I have none left? Should I really try and figure it out? I did...

Do I really need a digital scale?

I'm borrowing a regular Salter scale from a friend, but am now thinking after doing some reading, that I should really use a digital one? I really don't want to buy one, I don't even know if I'll be making soap again...but might my batch come out wrecked if I don't?

    Water Question

I live in the southeast of England where the water is really hard. We live near chalky hills. Should I not use tap water, and buy distilled water? Where can I buy it in England? What about rainwater? Would local rainwater be hard if the tap water is? It's raining this weekend, so I could...

    Blender questions

Is this the type of stick blender people mean? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kenwood-HB150-S ... 177&sr=1-5 Also, I read a beginner's guide thingy at the end of someone's post which he recommended I read, and I'm a bit confused about this part: 'Carefully pour the lye water into the measured...

How long does it take to make soap?

I've had my supplies for a couple weeks now but never get a chance to make my shampoo bars! I have 2 tiny kids, so it's hard to find a good time. How many hours will it take? I just need to melt the hard oils and then let them and the lye cool, mix, then let everything trace, right? How long...

    Which coconut oil?

The cheap white standard or virgin organic? It's for shampoo bars. I was going to get the nice virgin kind but would I even notice the difference?

I need a simple shampoo bar recipe please!

I want to try out soap making, and I also want to try out using shampoo bars for washing my hair. I don't know how much I'll like either, so I'm looking for a recipe with just a few ingredients, so I don't have to spend lots of money on this 'experiment'! I found this recipe, but have been...
