    insulation

I have been reading up in Susan Miller Cavitch and she basically says that insulating the soap after moulding and not allowing it to cool too fast aids saponification, and that if you don't it can slow it down or possibly prevent the reaction from being completed at all. This seems contradictory...

I need a replacement for palm oil can i use trex or cookeen

As far as I can work out, Trex is very likely to be made of palm oil itself. I tried to do it without palm by using Trex but then I found out it's probably palm. I tried emailing them but they wouldn't answer my question.. I've gone for the palm oil with a 'sustainability statement' from the...

    What got you started soaping?

I was fed up with my skin reacting to shop bought products and have always preferred handmade soap, I like Lush products too and I imagine it's because of the absence of preservatives etc that I don't break out in eczema when I use them, so I decided to buy a book and find out how to make...

    Sodium Hydroxide Suppliers UK

Order it at Boots the chemist, it's cheap there! I just rang up and asked, then went in and collected. I did the same for castor oil too, they can get it for you in larger quantities if you ask. (I'm in Hampshire, by the way.)

    lampwork beads

Yes I do, though I'm not great at keeping my online shop stocked up! I sell at a local market every month as well now, and it's become a juggling act. Not sure on the rules of the forum for advertising, but my shop is the same as my forum name..

    Jo Malone Type Orange Blossom

Wow, they look very pretty - is the fragrance a perfume? I didn't realise you could use perfumes..

first soaps that I'm proud to show..

Thank you :) I wanted the swirl to go deeper but it doesn't look bad. The brown dots are finely grated up choc - not the sort with any dairy in but solid cocoa almost, and the paler brown is the coffee (didn't want to use too much).

possibly the ugliest bar EVER made

I think it looks cool! I have only coloured my goatsmilk soaps with chlorophyll and coffee so far, they don't transform into another colour..

    honey in soap

I did a 15 oz batch of soap recently with 1 rounded teaspoon of honey. It went fine, and I think the sugars in the honey have added to the bubbles.

first soaps that I'm proud to show..

These are the first with good colours (chlorophyl, coffee and choc) and the smell has stayed so I'm really pleased. I also got a complete gel, think I like the way that looks too. mint choc cp goatsmilk soap by turnedlight, on Flickr lemon lime and tea tree cp goatsmilk soap by...

    Palm free harder bar??

Sorry to maybe put a spanner in the works, but I am keen to not use anything that is of a questionable source too, and if Crisco is anything like Trex (what we get here in UK for veg shortening) then it's probably made using Palm.. I haven't even managed to get confirmation on that because the...

which sort of coconut oil, and is red coloured palm oil ok?

Ok, thank you, that's so helpful everyone :D

great looking and feeling but not much fragrance

I suppose the fragrance oils must be completely man made, then, for them to be cheaper? I wonder how you make, for example, a mint fo, without actually using real mint to make it? I have found my lavender eo's to fade too, I have one store bought and one from a local lavender farm which is...
