    adventures in soaping

Looks like you've got the bug! I like the look of the cranberries; I would be interested to know whether they hold up over time.

Menthol Crystals in hot process soap

I want to make a menthol and lime soap; but information on how to use the crystals - how best to melt them, when to incorporate them and amount to use seems thin on the ground. All advice welcome.

Does it go in the fridge or under blankets??

After may ruined batches that stank horribly, I've adopted the room temp CP method, then straight in the freezer for at least 24 hours. Works for me.

    Newbie question about avocado oil.

Personally, I have found that avocado oil makes my bars smell like rancid oil after they get old, so I don't use it at all any more. But maybe the oil I got was nearly gone off when I got it?? I never use FOs....although sometimes they do sound tempting. But in my attampt to create products...

    Sweaty soap

I have some old soaps that have been sitting around in the open air. For instance, I have pure olive oil soap bars that are over a year old - so it's well cured. Today I noticed that the top of it (the side that would have been the top in the mould) was really moist. The other sides were fine...

Adding glycerine and salt to CP soap?

The bars are now very hard, but some fracturing on cutting, which I put down to a combination of the sodium lactate and leaving it longer than I should have to cut it, expecially in light of the fact that I used SL. So I'm a bit fed up about that, but otherwise the soap should be good. At least...

    Adding milk to HP

What is cultured milk? Not something I have come across here in the UK. And cultured milk of what animal?

Remember the Breastmilk Soap thread? This is a must see!

Let's hope not or you could have a bun in the oven just from washing. And how difficult moght that be to explain?????? Excuse the accidental pun???? :D :D

    Adding milk to HP

I've been doing CP for quite a while, but have only recently started doing HP. If you add the milk after the cook, does it not go sour....and smell sour? And if not, why not?

    Sub for milk products...

But does anyone know whether the vegetable milks have any similar or identical constituents as e.g. goat milk? And which if any, give the same properties in the soap? Although I have to say, if I could find an alternative to GM, that performs as well, I would love to try it, as GM always leaves...

Adding glycerine and salt to CP soap?

Thanks for the advice, but being the impetuous fool that I am, I'd already gone and made it by the time the advice came in. I didn't add salt, but did add 2% glycerine, and also 2% sodium lactate in an attempt to harden it up. It doesn't seem to be attracting moisture so far, although I've no...

Adding glycerine and salt to CP soap?

I'm planning on making a soap specifically for the face, and want it to be as non drying as possible. So thought of adding some extra glycerine. I know it will make the soap softer, and also don't want to add so much that the soap attracts moisture like M & P soaps do. Has anyone done this and...

    Liquid Castille

Hi VL, One reason it's not great for washing up liquid is that it makes the water very cloudy. Another is that the bubbles disappear too fast. Another is that it just isn't concentrated enough to cut through the grease. Maybe a pure coconut soap with no superfat and made partly with potassium...

    sorry, I meant E-wax

    Liquid Castille

P.S. It's no good as dish washing liquid. :( But now I'm thinking of seeing if it would act as an emulsifier to make lotions. I have had some success with using lecithin granules. My understanding is that E-was contains SLS and PEG 100 whiich I think is derived from petroleum, both of which...

    Liquid Castille

I just made some of this yesterday with a couple of year old bars of my own soap. Even when it had cooled down it was like water; I resisted the temptation to heat again and add more pectin, and left it to sit for several hours by which time it turned to an apple sauce consistency. I added a tbs...

How to avoid that horrible smell in goat's milk soap?

Thanks for the replies. Unlike my other two failed batches, the nasty smell seems to have faded within a week or so. The failed ones still stank months later so I had to bin them. They were so bad, I didn't even think I could try any kind of rebatch....and who likes doing that anyway?? I think...

    vanilla infused oil

Thanks for the replies. I did use the oil in some goat's milk soap BUT cheated a bit and added 1% Strax Benzoin; so, highly unscientific, I can't tell which is responsible for the lovely vanilla smell in the final soap.
