Goat's Milk Soap and pH Levels

I would really like to understand more about pH levels in CP soap generally, and in goat’s milk (gm) soap in particular. I have read that the pH of the average person’s skin is 5.5, and most fall in the range of 5.2 – 6.2. The pH of a typical CP soap is in the 9.5 – 10.5 range. The pH of gm...

Tank Cutter - Cured Bar Weight

For those of you that use a “Tank” cutter (or Tank style cutter that cuts one inch thick bars with a wire), what is the fully cured weight of your soap. I realize that there are other variables, my molds make soap that measure 3.5” wide by 2 3/8” tall. Thanks.

    Interesting Soap Calculator

A came across an interesting soap calculator that factors the superfat level in predicting soap qualities. The site is: http://calc.mendrulandia.es/?lg=en#ayuda I also like that the “ideal” number for the qualities (except iodine and INS) is 50, with an acceptable range of 40-60. This...

Select Shades Coloring System – a Mini Review

Select Shades is a FD&C and D&C dye based coloring system whereby you buy a set of 8 colors, and using the color charts provided, can mix them into over 800 color shades. The cost is very reasonable, $26 for eight 2 oz bottles. I had no problem with ordering and delivery from Tradewinds...

    WSP Silicone Molds

I purchased 2 of the green silicone 3.5x8x2.5 loaf molds and one blue silicone 2.5x3.5x1.25 rectangular mold from Wholesale Supplies Plus (WSP) a month ago and here are my impressions of these products. The loaf mold has reinforced sides that hold its shape. I can fill them to the top...

    Select Shades Lavender

Has anyone using Select Shades figured out how to get a lavender color. Referring to their charts, I have tried Cuban Orchid, Misty Lilac, and Easter Egg. All seemed to come out way more pink than purple. I also tried Purple Velvet by itself and the soap just came out gray.

    Not Exactly What I Expected

I made an experimental 8 oz. batch using rosemary (grown in our own garden) infused olive oil, coconut oil, plus 1/4 tsp powdered dried rosemary. No other coloring or fragrance was added. Immediately upon hitting the batter with the stick blender, it turned a vibrant pumpkin orange color...

    Initial Observations

I have only been making soap for two weeks now so I don’t pretend to know a whole lot, but here are some initial observations. My second batch contained oatmeal. When I initially poured into the mold, I was very happy that I had the base color just where I wanted it. I must admit to being a...

    Fragrance Oils And Lye Calculation

My question is whether I need to include fragrance oil in my lye calculation. I am new to soaping and made my first scented batch today using .5 oz. of lavender fragrance oil. Using SoapCalc I determined that 69.69 grams of lye was required for my 16.5 ounce batch (not including the fragrance...
