    What is going on here?

I forgot to answer your question. The photo is of the soap unused. mine looks exactly the same as that photo, unused as well.

    What is going on here?

Yes, I wonder what the film on top is and is it harmful? I emailed him and got a very confusing answer, similar to the reply he made. I also want to know if it is actually melt pour since it is not advertised as that and it wasn't cheap. I did not even think about that until I saw that on...

    What is going on here?

Can anyone please explain what this is? Is it a M&P soap, is the Douglas Smythe guy who makes it baffling us with bullpoop? I bought one of these and mine looks the same exact way. I just would like to know if I'm getting taken for a ride?

My first shaving soap is a success!

I find it very drying. All of the MdC clones are not very conditioning. Catie's Bubbles and WSP come to mind. The soap makers that use some conditioning oils and/or butters are a little better in terms of face feel but not much. Sure, they lather like a dream but so does a good tallow like...

    KOH and NaOH question

I've made a shaving soap with both a coconut oil base and only KOH and a tallow base using both KOH and NaOH. Why does the KOH only (coconut) get so much thicker when I HP it compared to the KOH and NaOH (tallow) soap? Is it a combination of the lye that makes it more fluid or is it the...

    Help with my shaving soap

These soaps (HTGAM) have come under some scrutiny lately on the shaving forums. There is a suspicion growing that these might be M&P soaps even though the maker makes claims to the contrary. I for one am unsure but I have never seen a translucent HP soap or one with such a smooth appearance.

    Aleppo Soap! The real thing!!!

Question - Is the "Laurel Fruit Oil" listed on soapcalc the correct one to use for Laurel Oil?

Shaving soap with NAOH and KOH?

I have looked at those horsehairs. They look interesting for sure. I'm thinking of just biting the bullet and getting a silvertip badger from one of the guys (WD) that makes brushes. He has great prices and excellent reviews. The thought of a used brush for some may be fine and I'm sure it is...

Shaving soap with NAOH and KOH?

Irish Lass, happy to hear that your last experiment was a success! I find this all very fascinating. I made my own shave soap using the recipe in Songwinds epic thread but found it a little drying. I tried another using tallow, stearic, coconut and shea with a 60/40 KOH-NaOH split and liked...

Shaving soap with NAOH and KOH?

I'm no expert in shaving soap or any soap for that matter but from reading I think getting your stearic up to 50% is going to be very beneficial and a noticeable improvement. That alone would make a big difference but in conjunction with your 66% KOH and 36% NaOH plan will take it to the "next...

    A very hard bar?

I have some interest in making a hard bar of soap. I'm looking for a mildly cleansing soap with good conditioning, creamy lather but rock hard. I have been playing around in Soapcalc and came up with a bar that meets those criteria and the hardness level is a whopping 63. I have made a...

Shaving soap with NAOH and KOH?

It sounds like you have a big fan! It's been great fun following along with you on your experiments. My curiosity is in the above quoted post. It's hard to believe that not having clay in the soap would make such a drastic difference. There are so many great performing soaps out there that...

    Goat Milk Soap Skin Benefits?

My friend who is a much more experienced soaper than I am gave me two bars of soap that were identical except one was made with goats milk. There was a noticeable difference. The goat milk one was definitely creamier and lathered easily plus the bubbles were more abundant in the milk one. She...

Thank you HoneyLady! That is a very interesting read. I got lost on the website for a good hour. I really appreciate that!

    Savon de Marseille Questions

Thank you Susie for the link. While it is an interesting discussion on using salt or brine to "clean up" rancid or used oil and maybe to a lesser degree correcting a lye heavy batch of soap, I'm not quite convinced it is relevant to the process I'm questioning.

    Savon de Marseille Questions

Yes, me again with more questions. I seem to have more interest in learning about the history and the how's and why's of soap then the actual making of soap. I have made 4 batches of soap to date. A failed goat milk and honey cp soap (overheated), a castile soap (very nice and on month 4 of a...

    Type of bubbles honey adds?

What is the quality of the bubbles or lather does honey make? Is it creamy bubbles or large, airy bubbles like coconut oil? Or, to put it another way, is your soap made with honey more creamy then without it? How much honey do you use ppo? Thanks in advance! Oh and Happy 4th of...

    Cure HP shave soap?

Thanks DeeAnna! You were one of the people I was hoping would reply as I value your knowledge and I know you have been very active on that thread and experimenting with the process yourself. I'd like to hear Songwind's opinion to. Or anyone else for that matter. I know that the soap is...

    Cure HP shave soap?

I made a small batch of HP shaving soap this morning and I used the recipe from the epic "First shaving soap is a success" thread. Since it's to soft to be cut into bars I glopped it into a few tupperware containers. Should I put the lids on right away or let them cure uncovered? If I'm...
