    EO's for candles

Hi everyone, I'm just starting to dabble in candles, and have made one one-pound soy pillar candle so far. I used a tablespoon of lavender EO in it. It smells amazing up close, but the scent doesn't throw into the room at all. I've been searching around to find out how aromatherapy...

    Percentage of coconut oil

I have a minor dilemma here...or maybe not. In reading some old posts yesterday, I saw that there shouldn't be more than 20-24% coconut oil in a recipe or the result would be too drying. I've been happy with my soap formula that has 30.5% coconut oil...it doesn't seem drying at all...

    EO's for coffee soap?

Hi, All! I haven't been around for a while, but I'm getting back into my soap making and looking for some new ideas. Hubby wants me to make a coffee soap, and I've read up on that. However, I don't want to use FO's, so does anyone have an idea of what EO's would be complementary to coffee...

    Orange EO in soap

Hi everyone, I got this huge jar of valencia orange EO and would like to use it in CP soap, but I've heard that citrus EO's don't hold up with CP. Should I even bother, or would it work if I just use a ton of it, like maybe 5-6 TB for 4 lbs? I'd like to blend it with some other oils, so I...

    Sealing sugar scrub

Hi all! I'm wanting to sell some sugar scrubs and haven't been able to come up with a reliable method of sealing the jars so they don't leak in transit. Having them heat sealed is not really a viable option for me. Hubby wants to try putting it in a seal-a-meal bag, and a friend thought we...

    Grapefruit Seed Extract amount

Hi all, I've searched and can't seem to find this info. If I'm making a sugar scrub, and using GSE as a preservative, how much should I use? Also, does adding honey to a sugar scrub change the amount of GSE I should use? Thanks!

    Pricing Gift Baskets

Hi all, I have my first craft fair this weekend and I've made up a few gift baskets. They're cute little wicker-type baskets (@ $1.00) with some shredded paper filler and a raffia bow. I included two bars of soap (normally $6 each or 2/$10), one body butter ($12 or 2/$20), one lip balm ($5)...

    Cocoa butter aroma

Good afternoon, everyone! Does anyone know if non-deodorized cocoa butter retains its chocolatey smell in CP soap? TIA

    Citrus Lip Balm?

Someone recently told me that citrus EO's aren't good for lip balm because they're...I can't remember the word - photo-something...meaning your lips can get sunburned. Has anyone else heard this? I see lots of citrus lip balms for sale and I'd like to make one too, but don't want to risk that...

    Alien Brain

I made a batch yesterday with pumpkin, ginger EO, a little cinnamon EO and some spices. This morning it appears to have "alien brain" on top. From what I understand, it means it got too hot. But is it still usable? The color's not bad and it smells like ginger. Thanks! :D

    Dry-Flo Amount

So I just got some Dry-Flo to try to degrease my body butter a bit. If I make a 4-ounce batch of body butter, how much Dry-Flo should I add? Thanks!

    Insulating wooden mold?

Hi all! I just got my first wooden log mold and I'm about to make my first batch with it. Do I still need to wrap the wooden mold in a blanket or is the wood enough to keep it warm? The lid apparently fits down inside the mold to sit on top of the soap, but my batches are always so liquidy...

    Chalky soap?

I've had great success with my basic soap recipe, so I decided to add my EO's at trace this time. I made a small 13 oz. batch two days ago. I also added about a half tablespoon of blue corn meal for color. Just barely traced, as usual, and then I poured into a few small molds. I was just...

    Curing time

Hi all, I made my first batch of CP soap 20 days ago. I hand milled a couple of bars of it eight days ago. I couldn't stand it any longer and just washed my hands with one bar. It lathered great and felt great, but afterwards my hands feel very dry. I tested the pH and it's at 7. I'm in...

    Body butter too hard

Hi all, I've tried three small batches of body butter and I can't seem to get the right consistency. Here's my last recipe: 1.2 oz. cocoa butter .3 oz. shea butter .3 oz. beeswax .3 oz. mango butter .3 oz. coconut oil .8 oz. jojoba oil .8 oz. avocado oil plus vitamin E and EO's...

    Refrigerating oils

I'm getting a little concerned over whether I should be refrigerating any of my oils and butters. I haven't found a comprehensive list of which ones should be refrigerated. I have: palm oil coconut oil jojoba oil avocado oil sweet almond oil aloe extract oil cocoa butter shea butter...

Hand Milling Problem - not melting

Sorry to repeat, but I thought this might not get noticed in my old thread... Today I grated some of my first soap to hand mill, added 75% water, and had it on the double boiler for about a half hour. All I got was a goopy paste. Put it in the microwave for 4-5 minutes at 50% power and got a...

    Finally hello!

I've gotten ahead of myself by jumping in and asking questions, so I guess I should introduce myself! My name is Dee and I live in southern Colorado. Married with two daughters, one in college and one in high school. I'm the assistant director of a music festival and, as one might have...

    Aloe Extract Fixed Oil

Hi all, I bought a bottle of Aloe Extract Fixed Oil and now I realize that I have absolutely no idea how to use it! Do I add a few drops like I would EO's, do I use it in place of another carrier oil, use it in place of water, or what? I'm making soaps, lip balms and body butters...

    Body Butter Mess

I just made my first batch of body butter, which didn't turn out like I'd hoped, but that's another issue. Mainly, it was really messy trying to get the butter into the jar. Is there some brilliant method of transferring it to containers besides using a spoon? Thanks!
