Yes that's what I use but mine are wide and they leave a mark.
Hopefully nylon g strings will be strong enough. Have you tried them?

My cutter has all the original wires it came with 15 years ago, and I've never had to replace them.
I've never had a problem with spots, or the wires causing lines once I was patient and waited to cut until they were firm enough.
Everything in soapmaking is such a waiting/timing game. Have to wait until just the right time with everything, from start to finish!
 
I'm lucky to have a good source of violin and cello strings - made to tolerate much higher tension and the higher stings are very thin.

They aren't nylon coated are they (my sister used to play and I seem to remember them hurting my fingers when I tried to emulate her!) so they leave a mark on the soap?
