You don't need a thermometer, so save there. 10$ gets you a good enough sb for now. Scales, I think Walmart would also work - digital and ideally grams for accuracy is good.

It really is a wonderfull feeling of picking up a piece of soap that you have made yourself, and feel the lather and water clean your hands.
I am sure you will stick with this when you feel the rewards of making something with your own two hands, that you can even USE on your own two hands... ; P
Not much that beats the feeling of not having to go to the store just because you are all out of soap : D
