Can someone tell me what just happened?

it definitely sounds like ricing. On a separate note, tinctures are usually alcohol based and alcohol can do some very strange things when added to raw soap... often called "seizing", it essentially accelerates trace to the point where the soap all sets at once, while still in the bowl...

Another coconut milk soap recipe and questions

I would run the entire recipe through SoapCalc or some other soap calculation tool to make sure that the SAP values are accounted for... especially if you plan on making substitutions. http://www.soapcalc.net/calc/SoapCalcWP.asp

    Mixing Olive Oils

So... any problems with trace yet?

    A funny for Soapers! :)

LOL! I guess that makes me a Colorist-Scenter-Castile Maker with Group Soaper tendencies. I used to be an Expense Artist, but found my niche with the Castiles. (Which, btw, makes me a veggie, by definition)

    Great News

Sometimes you need to get there ahead of the family unit and scout the place out to see what's available... something is bound to open up. In the meantime, occasional visits back home will make this time bearable, if not fun. Save save save as much as you can for the deposits on a larger...

gauging interest on the following brushes

*Hand up Assuming you are proposing a split, depending on price, I may good for as many as 10.

    BAD olive oils!

Ah... well... there's your problem. Except it isn't a problem. Sometimes Castiles take as much as 72 hours to set up enough to unmold, depending on your house temperatures. Pure olive oil soaps are tricky... they take a long time to trace and a long time to set up. Your best bet is to...

    BAD olive oils!

    What exactly is going wrong?

    Tuesday's full moon...

I too am a proud Witch, but this moon I will be spinning, not soaping; perhaps new moon will find me making something cleansing.... hmmmm.

Botched batch? Should I cry now or wait?

Most of your oils are soft; it may take a little longer for the soap mass to harden. You are also using a lot of olive oil... that also causes setup to take longer. Also, your Iodine count in the recipe is a little high... this will soften the end product a little and make it take longer to...

    soap is messing with me

Get an oven thermometer and check to make sure your oven isn't on its way over to the enemy. Sometimes oven thermostats go bad and the internal temperature of the oven is much higher than the setting indicates.

Used too much EO, soap still soft...what to do with it now?

According to most of my reading, anything over 10% castor is going always be a little soft and slightly sticky. I generally use 5-7% and get a really creamy lather. The one time I used more than that the soap was always sticky, and though it did eventually harden in the cure, as soon as it...

    Stamped buttermilk & honey

OO Soaps are tricky, especially if you use a water discount; there is a fairly narrow window where the consistency of the soap is good to stamp easily before it gets so incredibly HARD that you will need metal stamps instead of acrylic or hard rubber. I find that my OO soaps are good to stamp...

    Batch #2 In the Oven!

Well, the exotic oils thing seems to settle out after a few batches...then you begin developing a "Go to" recipe, with variations based on need or interest. For instance, I usually make 100% OO soaps... it is simply my go to recipe. I have made other things, but when I want something that I...

    Batch #2 In the Oven!

Though not a "Perfect" Lyn Top, it is, nonetheless, very nice. I cannot wait to see the cut pics.

    Edge Coating on M&P

Have you ever made hollow chocolate baskets? You get the chocolate to a thick liquid state and then pour some in the mold... then you swirls the mold around (or spin it, depending on the type of mold) to get the chocolate to adhere to the sides of the mold. As the chocolate cools it becomes...

    Edge Coating on M&P

If I had to guess, I would say they did a thin layer of the bright pink, then they did a thicker layer of the hot pink and created the hot pink curls. Then added the bright pink inner pour.

How much salt can be added to lye water ?

I don't know if they add more salt, or if they use the water from the salt-beds. I just know that some of the more classic soaps in the Provence have a salt residue and I asked if the soap is salted out and they said they just use seawater from the Mediterranean washed through olive wood ash...
