i mixed my FO with kaolin and TD, then added it to the oils before adding the lye. the first time i made it, i remember it was a hot day and i put the mould in the sun to assist gel. i have also made it without gelling and the result was a paler colour. again i added TD and clay.

i have been mixing my lye in a stainless steel saucepan (in the laundry where all my other soap stuff lives - too risky in the kitchen) and have seen you tube videos and other people mention that they ix their lye in plastic buckets. i am assuming it is safe to mix lye in plastic containers but...

so one can still get ash irrespective of whether we gel or not. has there been any scientific mind out there who can enlighteb us as to why we get ash? it's something oxide because we only have it if the surface is exposed to air.

i do deal with the ash, but sometimes it would be nice to have some control over how things turn out; probably not realistic in the world of saop, but i'd like to give it a try.

the shire? i've been going down there quite a bit lately - illawong, lugarno, panania, san souci (met some new friends)...many soapers where you are? i've only ever met one other person in real life who has made soap (out of curiousity, i think), and he lives in the city.
