    Cutting too soon

I always cut after 24 hours, but I still get drag marks from time to time. Meh. I don't care - my soaps are simple and rustic looking anyway (I embrace the ash!) and my customers seem to love it.

Customer service at Columbus Foods / Soaper's Choice?

Thanks everyone. I'll try calling when I get a chance.

Customer service at Columbus Foods / Soaper's Choice?

Has anyone else experienced issues with getting a response from customer service at Columbus Foods? I have asked repeatedly for a copy of their organic certification for their organic certified coconut oil (I have a retailer selling my soaps who wants to see the organic certification for my...

    scam alert

I was contacted by one of these shipping scammers a couple of weeks ago, too. :-x They seem to be targeting a lot of soap makers, as I found this when I googled the shipping company email address that the scammers wanted me to contact...

    Farm fresh eggs

I get them from a local farm (yes, NYC has lots of local farms!) with the bloom intact, so I don't even refrigerate them. I'm a single gal and I go through a little over a dozen a week. I love to make fritatta with whatever veggies I have that I need to use up, as well as quiche. My favorite way...

    My packaging

Thanks! Yep, it's a big bar. I wanted it to be a bit different and rustic and I think the size contributes to that. The cool thing is that if people want a smaller bar, they can easily slice it in half and get two "normal" sized bars. It's "choose your own adventure" soap. ;)

    My packaging

Thanks! The deli paper is pre-cut and in an interflded pop-up box and I pre-cut a bunch of the twine. I print a sheet of 12 labels at a time (and I make 18" loaves, so I get 12 1.5" bars from each loaf), which I currently cut by hand, but I'll probably get a little paper cutter soon to make...

    Laundry powder

I had a bunch of Kirk's soap I needed to get rid of, so I used them to start making my own laundry powder. I don't use borax because I didn't have any when I wanted to make this, and I was too lazy to walk a block to the store to get any. Ha! I've been using this for a few months now and it...

    How important is distilled water?

I live in Brooklyn (Park Slope), and I don't belong to Brooklyn CP Soapmakers. Care to share their info.?

    My packaging

I finally settled on packaging for my soap. I only plan to sell online at this point, so I'm OK with wrapping the whole bar. If I ever sell at farmers markets, I'd probably just set out a naked bar for see-n-sniff purposes. I really like the way this has turned out. :) I wrapped with a sheet...

    Business Name Questions

Your secretary of state website will have all the info. you need. You can do name searches, and they will list rules that apply to naming your business. If a name is available, you're free to take it. Pretty simple. Business formations are always done at the state level, so that's where you need...

    How important is distilled water?

I've been making soap for about 15 years and I've never used distilled water. I use tap water and have never had a single problem. Granted, the tap water in NYC has been called the "champagne of municipal tap waters" because of its quality. For whatever that's worth.

What kind of mold do u prefer?

I have these 5 lb HDPE loaf molds: http://www.etsy.com/listing/95724379/hdpe-2-soap-molds-36-bar-10lb-y-line-kit?ref=shop_home_active They're OK, but I think there are two big drawbacks: 1. The corners are SHARP. You really need to be careful using them, or you can really slice yourself up...

Help! Losing Sleep Over a Business Name...

I read apothecary and immediately froth came to mind, so I started thinking of things to go with that. You mentioned steampunk, so I started thinking of gears and cogs, so Froth & Cog came from that. I don't think cog has any relation to soap making, unless you think of cogs as being a part of...
