I get flakes sometimes, and other times not at all. Same lye, same distilled water, same container. Cannot figure out a pattern or reason why but it is OK to use. Some like to strain the flakes out with a strainer.

This exactly. If I don't use mineral oil, mine always sticks. Badly. Get it from Wal Mart or the drug store. Sodium lactate definitely helps a bunch too.
