So I guess I totally blew it on this soap with coconut milk added?

Oh I see artemis, thanks! Then I guess if I use real milk (rather than powdered) I guess I really need to do cold process soap rather than hot process? Thanks!

So I guess I totally blew it on this soap with coconut milk added?

I do leap before I look quite often not_ally. :) Thanks! The problem is I wasn't quite following it. I follow just substitute the water our for the milk in. Then add the lye to that. Which is what I did. But where I get lost is the "(to be on the safe side, freeze the milk into ice cubes...

So I guess I totally blew it on this soap with coconut milk added?

Tried to add some coconut milk to my soap (several different oil). I tried to wait until trace and after it had cooled down some. But see below for the results. The smell is not bad, but a definite "cooked" smell. So I'm pretty sure the coconut oil cooked and turned brown. I'm assuming the...

Curious what the forum thinks of "Zote" Mexican soap (mainly for laundry)?

Sorry, not sure what the right forum is for this, apologies if I got it wrong. But I was just curious if anyone has any thoughts on "Zote" soap? Made in Mexico for many years, apparently quite popular. Its mainly a laundry soap, but its hard, I believe they make it using lye and various oils...

Can you use 100% whole milk for the oil?

Hmmm, let me ask my question a different way. You mentioned SAP value, which it sounds like determines how much lye per amount of oil or fat. So my question is this - where can I find the SAP values for goat milk fat and coconut milk fat? I did a quick google search and the coconut one and...

Can you use 100% whole milk for the oil?

Thanks AliOop. Yea, I think I follow all that from the article. I think I'm indeed going to just sub out the milk for the water, and use regular oils. But my real question is how to figure out how much lye to add if you want to hit an exact superfat number. For cow milk its easy, right there...

So what happens if you just introduce your dry lye directly to the oils, nice and slowly?

I keep reading/hearing that water is only really used to "introduce" the lye to the oils, its not needed for saponification to take place. So I am curious, what if you pour the dry lye into the oil directly, although at a very, very slow rate, while stirring/mixing the whole time? Thanks!

Can you use 100% whole milk for the oil?

Thank you Booker and AliOop! That link you posted was interesting AliOop. But one thing it didn't cover is how much (lye) you'd need if you replaced some/all of the water/oil in the recipe with milk (or other dairy products). Let's say you were making a soap using X oil, wanted it to be 0%...

Can you use 100% whole milk for the oil?

Happy new year everyone!!! Just curious - can you use whole milk for the oil? Lots of fat in whole milk, but maybe its not an "oil" so that won't work. If you cannot, can you substitute out whole milk for 100% of the water in the recipe? How will that turn out? Thanks!!!

Why does my hot process soap look slimy and yucky like this?

Oh shoot. I see, that negative means it will be a soft bar. BUT, I've made 100% flax soap before, and did NOT end up with that slime bar - a soft bar for sure, but it was still a normal (although soft) bar of soap. There is something I am doing wrong to make it that gel/slime no matter how...

Why does my hot process soap look slimy and yucky like this?

I googled, but INS means soap will be hard it seems? That was anything but hard haha.

Why does my hot process soap look slimy and yucky like this?

But what does INS mean exactly? Thanks!

Why does my hot process soap look slimy and yucky like this?

Thanks Zany. It absolutely saponified, the zap test, while zapping me hard at first, went down to no zap. I cooked it a LONG time. What is INS -6, and why should I care? Thanks!

Why does my hot process soap look slimy and yucky like this?

Thanks everyone! I plan to try another batch soon, maybe even this evening. Will get better/more pictures this time. But my narrow questions: It sounds like I should pour my HP soap into the molds when it is "translucent". I think this is AFTER the "mashed potato" phase, and also AFTER when...

Why does my hot process soap look slimy and yucky like this?

Thank you Lidia, I suspect me adding to much water may have been part of the problem. Can I ask you (or whoever else might want to chime in) a few follow up questions? You say pour when the soap is translucent. That sounds like its well after trace. I believe I heard the Brambleberry lady...

Why does my hot process soap look slimy and yucky like this?

Thanks Ali! I just used soap calc, and measured my grams of flax oil, put in 0% superfat, no fragrence, and used the amount of lye and water it spit out (and 38% water to oil ratio or whatever - the default). Thanks artemis! I am going to try again with this oil, and not cook it as long, and...

Why does my hot process soap look slimy and yucky like this?

Thanks everyone. The oil (and the lye) is a couple years old, but the thing is, this happened as well when both were brand new. 100% flax oil, nothing else, was the recipe. I cooked it a long time on high. I think more than an hour. Could it be this - when it was done, I simply left it...
