    The Lost Entry

So, "Jupiter" was supposed to be my entry into the March Inlaid Design Challenge, but with all the craziness that is life at the moment I wasnt able to finish it in time. :( Oh well. At least I can share it here.

One of these layers is not like the others...

So I was going for a 3-colour layered soap last night. Recipe was as follows (5% superfat): lye - 131 g water - 298g CO - 18% Lard - 47% OO - 21% Castor - 4% Avo - 10% Added powdered oats, goat milk powder and brought the whole mix to (what I thought was) light trace. Then I split the batter...

    Three Colour In-the-Pot

Just a simple in-the-pot swirl, but it was my first go with more than 2 colours. :) I also opted to keep the stick blender in it's drawer this time and brought the soap to trace by hand. Probably not something I'll do again (so loooooong), but it was a worthwhile exercise and I think I've a...

    Neem Oil Soap

15% neem oil soap with a first go at a 'hidden feather'. I was aiming for the image of a plant... ... ... didnt really achieve that, but I'm pretty happy with it anyway. I dont even mind the smell! lol I used a combination of geranium, tea tree, lavender, and cedarwood. I think they work with...

Canadians, where do you buy your supplies?

I've purchased from both New Directions Aromatics and Voyageur Soap & Candle, but am wondering what other options there are for base materials and essential oils? New Directions seems to have some of the best prices for essential oils, but the $100 minimum to avoid an admin fee is a bit much...

    Too many additives?

Is there such a thing as too many additives when it comes to CP soap? And by this I mean beyond pigment, scent, exfoliants, and any top decorations that one may use. I'm talking sugar/honey, milks, salt/vinegar, citric acid, EDTA, etc. They all seem to have the potential to add specific traits...

When (how) to use citric acid?

Okay, so my understanding is that including citric acid at approximately a 2% ratio can help with lather in hard water (which we most definitely have), can help reduce soap scum, and - to a lesser degree - may assist in preventing DOS... I've even got the math for replacing the lye that will be...

    Can trace be too thin?

Assuming the oils and lye water have been emulsified, is there such a thing as pouring your soap with a trace that is too thin? I think I'm too worried about ensuring a good trace has been reached and keep over-mixing so that my soap is virtually unpourable! lol

Favorite Base Oil / Oil Blends

I'm new to soaping and while I've been doing my research into the various oils that are most common to CP (and their respective traits) everything I've read is academic... so I'm wondering what is everyone's preferences in regard to the oil(s) that they most commonly use?

    Brand New from the North

Holla everyone, Canadian soaping newbie here (I've dabbled in a total of exactly 2 batches to date), but despite my lack of exposure I'm already officially obsessed! I legitimately spent pretty much all of my free time throughout the Christmas break reading anything and everything soap-related...
