    Scientific question

Is it possible to dissolve magnesium flakes in water and use that water to make soap? How would lye react to that? I've seen many bath salts made with magnesium flakes but I was wondering about how it could be incorporated into soap.

    Jojoba beads

I recently received a sample of jojoba beads. Has anyone used these before? What products do you use them in and how are they used? Are they beneficial like the oil, or just decorative? Thanks for your help!

    A couple display items.

Yesterday I went to jo annes fabric store and found these bead holders and the glass tea candle holder was from goodwill (originally walmart). Lip balm tubes fit perfectly into the bead organizer. Also lotion tubes fit in the glass tea candle holder. Nice way to keep your displays neat.

Why you need to take good notes-and a new product

A few months back I formulated what I had hoped to be a good quality cold cream. Long story short - it was a utter dismal failure. What I got was a little under a quart of a very runny, very oily white emulation. However I took exacting notes. Even what I did to try to fix it. In the end I added...

    Last weeks soaps

So the first picture some will recognized is my attempt to copy Aunt Clara's gray dapple soap. The second I made for a mason. The third and fourth were not meant to be bar soap. It is whipped soap I was pipping when I was called away and didn't want it to harden and go to waste so I molded it...

    Presentation

I'm been asked and am considering doing a presentation on bath and body products, demonstrating some easy DIY recipes. I have thought sugar scrubs ( oil based), lip balm, and perhaps all oil based body butter. ( as opposed to an emulsified butter. ) The presentation will be pretty open as...

    The perfect mica line

Seeing a picture on the forum of a soap with a mica line reminded me of a little experiment I did a while back. Occasionally I get heavy handed with mica when making a line, usually when I want the line to show up and it is important to the design. We all know the risk of this is having the...

Spring inspired soap and blackberry sage

A couple soaps I cut today. The spring inspired is scented with nag champa and the blackberry is of course, blackberry sage. They came out okay but I ran out of sunflowers for the spring (thought I had made more) so I had to use various flower soaps. Neither soaps have been cleaned up yet so...

    Question on master batching lye

I've master batched my oils for a while, but never my lye. I want to try master batching lye to save some time in waiting for cool down, ( it will be stored in a soap fridge) I understand to make a 50% solution and I think I understand how to translate that to my recipes, but I would like...

I made soap shampoo that feels like syndet!!

Okay I'm very excited. I just jumped out of the shower and I really want someone else to try this. I made this with my cream soap base so you will need 6 oz of cream soap and a bit of btms-50 to try this. First melt 1g of btms-50 in 58g of water, let this cool. Now mix it into your...

    Cutting crumbling soap, without crumbling

Since I'm moving my soaping time is greatly curtailed. I'm currently staying with my mom (House is sold and plane ticket isn't good for another 10 days...:-?) So today I had the time and made 2 loaves of mechanics soap. I only had a very fine pumice not my usual medium grit so I thought I...

I have angered the Soap Gods!

I just need a place to vent about the events that I just went through less than 30 mins ago. It's been really busy lately and the soap was dwindling and knowing I have a larger order coming up it was time to get my rear in gear. I made 4 loaves without a hitch, good scent, good color I was...

So you think you want to sell soap?

I thought a lot about this post. Whether or not I should post this or not and whether it would help anyone. I decided that if it helps one person then it will be worth it. A little back history on me. I'm 45 and since I was 20 I knew I wanted to work for myself. I was always involved in...
