Sorry for the vague title. :)

I only soap when the kiddos aren't home. They are in bed now though and I am in the mood to make some soap! :) I use frozen goat milk and mix my lye on my stove top under the running vent. I wear a mask too. I never smell the lye-mixing-with-the-liquid smell. Do you think it all is getting sucked up the vent or it is because I am mixing it with frozen milk in an ice bath? Do you think if bedrooms doors are shut the kids could smell it?

And yes, I am a bit paranoid when it comes to my kiddos... and lye.

Thanks for any replies. :)

I notice that I don't get the lye smell when using milks but I do when using something primarily water-based - tea, coffee, beer, etc.

Regardless, with a vent I wouldn't be concerned. Especially if the kids aren't in the same room.

unless they are standing over the container they would be fine even in the same room (breathing-wise, not spilling- or other-wise, of course).

your stovetop vent probably just pulls the air from under it and blows it out the top - unless you've vented it outside which is not typical.

be aware that if you do a LOT of soaping, the fumes can corrode your fan.
