I ordered premium grade fragrances. The first batch I made using them was 3.5pounds I put 2oz of Bay Rum in it. I love that scent but now I have to figure out how to reduce it in that batch I made. It blows me away every time I pass my soap shelves. I guess I have to melt it down & mix it with an unscented batch to drop it down a bit. Will that work? If it does how would I be able to get the same scent in another batch later.

Or should I just chuck it and start over?

Oh boy, I had one like that recently. I soaped SweetCakes Cedar &Spice in a plain tried and true recipe with OO,CO,PO and I gelled it although the gell did not quite get to the corners. I used my Kelsie mold and this gelling problem often happens with this mold. Well, the FO smelled amazing OOB. Once soaped, not only was it knock your socks off strong (I used 1 oz ppo) but it smelled awful. Sort of like a gerbil cage that had not been cleaned for awhile. It stank up my cure area. Finally, after several weeks, I moved it to a small area where I could shut the door and forget about it. After 5 weeks, I took a bar to the shower and it was a great soap, but the scent was too strong and it still smelt odd. I ditched that bar. It has now passed the three month mark on the cure rack and I have recently taken a bar into the kitchen soap dish. The scent has tamed and lessened so much that it is now not only usable but is quite pleasant. I can't smell it unless I put my nose to it. So, I say: don't throw that soap out. If you can manage to hold on to it on a cure rack for several months or longer, I think it will have mellowed out and also gotten to be a much creamier soap at the same time. I am sorry now I threw out that shower bar. But, ugg, at the time...my bathroom smelt terrible from it. Just goes to show 'ya.

oh, one more thing. I sure did not mean to imply that your soap smelt bad like mine did. Sounds like yours smelled wonderful, just too much so. Let it set there for several months and it will be better. Next time, just drop the amount of FO down a bit. You might have to experiment with how little you can get away with and still have a scent last. Some suppliers recommend as little as .5 ppo for their strong ones. That never really works for me, especially if I am gelling the batch. But one ounce can be way too much some times.

yep, one great way to use that soap is to incorporate it into another batch. you can grind it up and stick blend it in so it's pretty smooth, or if you use a contrasting color you can shred it, then just mix it in so you get a pretty look from it.

Some also chunk it up and then mix it gently into a new batch. I did something like that once...

I agree that is really cool looking.

I figured whatever I did I would not be able to recreate. Plus my hubby was whining about the smell when I started to melt it down to add to another batch to tame it a bit. So in the trash it went.
