I purchased 1 oz of Vanilla EO (Vanilla planifolia (in Jojoba oil)) at just under $23.00 / oz. So I was very excited and hopeful to make an (expensive!) luxuriously scented soap for myself. I used my normal, tried and true basic soap recipe that I use for all of my soaps, since it works very well with other EO's and has no real fragrance of its own. I was trying to pattern it after LUSH's rock star fragrance which contains Vanilla absolute and something that they call "perfume" which my nose translates as something like Nag Champa. So my oils weighed in at 33 oz, I used 6 tsp (looked like about 3/4 of the 1 oz bottle by visual) of Vanilla EO and 1 tsp of Nag Champa FO at trace and then poured. I unmolded this morning and am not sure what I ended up with, as my normally sensitive nose cannot pinpoint it, but my husand said immediately "hotel soap". I can't find ANY vanilla scent in the finished soap. Needless to say I am a little irritated and disappointed. Hotel soap was not my goal.

My main question is, what is the difference between Vanilla EO and Vanilla Absolute? They are both called Vanilla planifolia to the best of my knowledge. I haven't found a local contact / EO source who can walk me through the intricacies of the EO world yet, but I see now that it would be beneficial to make friends with someone who can!

The next part of that question is naturally, what Vanilla EO SHOULD / COULD I have used to get closer to my desired result? Anybody found a good one that is stable in CP soap? I would really like to use the true EO and not an FO if I can get it to work, even though its expensive.

Any thoughts on this are much appreciated!! Thanks in advance for your expertise and advice.....

Someone correct me if I'm wrong -

Vanilla absolute is as concentrated as it gets, and very strong (and very, very expensive, 1 oz over $100).

What you bought is that, diluted in jojoba oil. I wouldn't expect any of the scent to make it into the soap - it's very diluted already.

It's much cheaper to buy a vanilla fragrance oil, which if you go check in the fragrance forum, I am trying to get people to list their favorite vanilla FO's so I can try them all out :) so maybe you can watch that thread and see if anyone else replies, and then try those too.
