As much as you can bear to part with is best - too small and it could struggle to lather.

For making it yourself, check out Manske for soaping supplies - but the oils like coconut, lard, tallow, Palm, and olive are very easy to find in shops in Germany. Tallow isn't available here, so I even have to get my tallow from Germany if I want to buy it

Coconut oil can be found in Hofer here at Christmas time for 1€ per 250g - not super cheap but cheaper than online

A good recipe to start is 30/30/30/10 Olive oil / coconut oil / palm oil/castor oil.

It is close to commercial soap but much milder.

For 500g of oils add 15-30g fragrance oil depending on the supplier and your preference.
