    Help! Shaving soap mystery

I made soaping101's shaving soap today (followed the recipe to a T). A few hours after unmolding it, little salt-like grains formed on the surface. Tongue test was fine, so I don't think it's lye. At least I hope it's not. 15% oo 25% co 30% po 10% castor 10% tallow 5% shea 5% cocoa 1...

    Fiveleafclover (if you're lurking)

I'm sorry your conversation here went sideways. It's just that we're all a bunch of hippies here, lol. I'm curious, what do you need your end product for? I mean, who would add a known carcinogen to their gorgeous natural soaps on purpose? You obviously know as much about this as any of us...

And because I have nothing else to do today

Here are pictures of yesterday's rebatch. The task: The squooshed mess after being in the slow cooker for about an hour: In the mold: aaaand cut:

    My balls

I've been pestered by a certain 2lilboots to post the results of my embed experiment. I'm pretty happy with it, considering it was my first time... for colours I used anatto in one batch (10% of oil weight, infused 1 tbs per 5 oz of castor) and alkanet in the other (15% of oil weight, infused...

    I'm doing it!

Just when I thought I'd make my first shampoo bar and researching a bit more before diving in, I came across some websites about not shampooing your hair anymore. Like, ever. When I say not shampooing, I don't mean not washing. I mean, the intent is definitely to wash your hair less and less...

    Awful

I'm doing my first monstrously large rebatch and, trying to make myself smart, have been watching youtube videos. I came across this one, a person called Nancy who has 4,775 subscribers. I hate to be judgmental (lol, no I don't), but the way she works makes me mental. The mess on her work...

White bar, creamy bar -- a comparison

Here is a comparison of two "white" bars, none of which contains colorants or titanium dioxide. The sample on the left contains lard, coconut oil and palm, and it's made with water (it's my alkanet sample bar, I just turned it over on its face). The sample on the right contains lard, coconut...

    Omg, don't do it!

I have a small lye burn on the top of my foot (don't ask), just a drop size, really. I've noticed that it doesn't heal properly, so I checked out lye burns online. DON'T DO IT! The pictures just about made me bring up my dinner.

    embed question

I have a few bars that I've made too many of. I'd like to chop them up and sprinkle them into other soap batters for interesting patterns. I may wet them, roll them thinly in cocoa powder and drop them into the soap batter to give them an outline, but that's an idea to pursue at a later time...

Alkanet surface swirl experiment (updated pic)

I made two batches this weekend in a very unscientific approach at trying out my new alkanet-infused olive oil. Here are the results: The mold was one of those boxes for Christmas cards they send you when you donate to a charity (Unicef, in this case). It holds exactly one pound of oils, as I...

How to come up with a really good recipe

You see, you wake up at 4:00am on a Sunday thinking about soaping, experimenting with your alkanet infusion and finally give in to the craving at 4:45am. You make the batch to relieve the craving, then, at 7:00am with the first load of laundry almost done, a frozen apple pie in the oven and...

    Rats!

I just gave away my last bar of soap from a batch that I made two years ago. I thought, fo sho, I have more somewhere, but I don't!! I really wanted to try it after curing it for two whole years, but it's gone. Gone to Ohio, as a matter of fact, south of the border where it's irretrievable. :(

    quick alkanet question

So I went ahead and ordered some. I can't find any consistent information on making an oil infusion anywhere.... if I infused one tablespoon in one pound of olive oil, does that sound right? And once it's done (I'm just going to leave the concoction on the counter for a few weeks), I'll use...

The Great Mold Experiment and its results (pics)

I've tried my new Mister-made, lacquered molds and, as instructed by all y'all, I have done the following, so we may all benefit from The Great Mold Experiment: - not lined or oiled one third, ie left the lacquered mold completely unprepared - oiled one third with baby oil - lined one third with...

Could you please share your goats milk recipe?

I'm looking for a relatively simple goat's milk recipe, and I couldn't really find any online that sang to me. Would you share one of your tried and true recipes with me and the reasons why you love it? Any responses before this weekend would be much appreciated!! :)

Brrr, COLD processing, aka my poor blender (pics)

I just HAD to use that empty Pringles can for a mold, I just absolutely had to. I had enough coconut milk frozen to make another 2lb batch of what might become my favourite recipe (too soon to tell). So I measured out my olive oil, then I chopped up the coconut milk, put the container in an...

Glycerin as by-product of soap making

As a percentage of the total batch (approximately), does anyone know how much glycerin is generated during CP saponification? I read somewhere that hand-made soaps contain 25% glycerin but quickly want to check with y'all if it's true.

This weekend's coconut milk adventure (pics)

So this weekend, I tried my first :D milk soap using only olive oil and coconut milk. Here's the recipe, using a 33% water discount and superfatted at 7%. 24 oz olive oil 7.92 oz frozen coconut milk, careful not to scorch! 3.024 oz lye The molds are PVC downspouts with one of the sides cut...
