White Color using CP, but normal using HP process. ??

There is something that I not understanding. If the dye was not stable in lye, then ALL of the soap (cold or hot process) that I have made with this Palm Oil should turn out white, even if I use hot-process. The label on my palm oil has: "USDA organic", "palmdoneright.com", "fair trade...

White Color using CP, but normal using HP process. ??

I thought that red palm oil was naturally red. I didn't realize that some of them could have been dyed red. I don't see why the manufacturers would want to do this. Do you happen to know what that pulication was ?

White Color using CP, but normal using HP process. ??

It was a new batch of red palm oil. I bought it from the store two days before. I was under the impression that the NaOH reacted with the CO2 in the air before it reacted with the oils. I'm not sure. For more details on the ingredients, see these pictures. I used the same ingredients. The...

White Color using CP, but normal using HP process. ??

Hello everyone, I did not use any scents or coloring at all. Here is the pic of the soap. You can see remnants of the orange in the interior center of the soap.

White Color using CP, but normal using HP process. ??

Hello everyone and happy holidays, I have done the 50% OO, 23 % Palm, 21% CO, and 6% Castor oil a few times now using HP process, and I liked the outcome. The color of the soap has always been orange due to the red palm oil. This time (to experiment), I did the same recipe using cold process...

How do you save time in the soapmaking process (survey) ??

Great ideas, everyone. One more thing to add from me. Use those same wax-lined paper milk cartons (1/2 gallon) to mold the soap and then recycle them after you have un-molded your soap. Don't have to worry about lining molds with freezer paper or washing silicone molds.

How do you save time in the soapmaking process (survey) ??

Hello everyone, Many of you have been making soap for a while, and I imagine that you have come up with ways to save time during the HP or CP processes. For everyone's benefit, perhaps you would like to share some of what you have come up with ? I can start. You know those wax-lined square...

Ingestible vs Non-Ingestible Castor Oil. Any Difference ?

This is good to know. I didn't realize that part about the cross-contamination.

Ingestible vs Non-Ingestible Castor Oil. Any Difference ?

Happy Holidays Everyone, I was looking at Castor Oil. I found two brands, both had only "castor oil" on the ingredients list. However, one said it was edible (you can take 1 teaspoonful for constipation). The other one plainly stated in bold "Do Not Ingest - External use only". Can I use...

Recipe Suggestions ? Want to try something new.

Thanks for all these suggestions. I definitely want to try out the avocado oil, now that people say that its soap won't spoil. Sounds like I can use it at 10 to 30% without problem. But there is one thing that I have been wondering about. Could I take the standard recipe that I have been...

Recipe Suggestions ? Want to try something new.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Sounds like I can replace the coconut and/or palm oil with the lard. Don't know what to do with the avocado oil. People have said that avocado oil makes a great soap. I am cleaning the lard. I melt it, then mix it with water, let it settle, dump the...

Recipe Suggestions ? Want to try something new.

Hello everyone, Up until now, my soap batches have been combinations of olive oil, palm oil, castor oil, and coconut oil. I'd like to try a different recipe. Can anyone suggest a recipe ? I have a good amount of olive oil, coconut oil and bacon grease (lard). I also have a little bit of red...

My HP procedure (in Pictures). Please Inspect.

I was wondering about when to stir. I thought that it would be best to wait until the island is gone (and then some) before I stir. This way I know ALL of the oils has been saponified.

My HP procedure (in Pictures). Please Inspect.

Hello everyone, I updated my HP procedure according to your comments that I received on my previous batch back in March. Picture of what I did are below. Am I making soap correctly ? I am using this soap and might give some of it to others, so I don't want to assume anything. I am still...

Lye Water Attacking my CrockPot ??

Lets say that the lye was hypothetically etching the glaze on my crock-pot as you described, would this etching leach an appreciable amount of impurities into my soap ? Etching is a chemical reaction, after all.

Lye Water Attacking my CrockPot ??

What I did with vinegar was spray it on, let it sit for a bit, and then scrub it off with a scrubby. I must be doing something wrong here. Seawolfe, is there a household way to test for hard water ?

Lye Water Attacking my CrockPot ??

It is reassuring to hear that. For a moment there, I thought that my lye-water was being contaminated by a shoddily made crockpot. So there is no way to clean this off ? I've tried all kinds of things. Thanks

Lye Water Attacking my CrockPot ??

Hello everyone, I have made about 5 batches of soap with this crock pot and there is this stain that I cannot remove. See picture below. Has the lye-water reacted with the ceramic surface of my crock pot ? Is this a safe ceramic surface to use ? Thanks

Butters/Exotics/Additives in CP soap - what works vs what doesn't?

What is a "butter" ? What is the difference between a "butter" and an "oil", from a soapmaking point of view ? I'm guessing that "shea butter" and "cocoa butter" fall in the "butter" category.
