The assumption that handmade soap isn't as "good".

It's crazy to hear people say that. Tho it doesn't surprise me at all. Here in Aus every other ad on tv is about how the evil 'germs' are all over your house, trying to kill your children, so you'd better buy this special product coz it's the only one that will really kill them for good! It's...

    I tried something new ???

I've made a very similar soap and I love it. My boyfriend really likes the cedarwood scent. I find that my olive oil soaps are very soft and mild on the skin. The only problem I find with high olive oil content soap is that it takes a lot longer to harden and it has a tendency to 'melt' if...

    Honey MSDS sheet

Just make an MSDS that says "this substance is classified a not hazardous". That should suffice.

    Honey MSDS sheet

An MSDS is necessary for a hazardous substance or dangerous good. I think it's safe to say that honey is neither of these.

    Pomace Olive Oil

Hold on, don't a lot of people use extra light olive oil for their soaping? That also undergoes chemical processing. In fact that's what makes virgin olive oil so special. I only eat extra virgin olive oil, but I use olive pomace in my soaps for the unsaponifiables.

    Lip Balm EO

I've never seen 'lip safe' EOs. The only time I expect to see that claim is from someone trying to charge you more for the same product. The EOs I use are the same EOs I'd put in soap or face creams.

    Lip Balm EO

I have used EO's in my lip balms with great success. My friends love them. The rules I was taught were to never use more than 1% EO and make sure that the EOs aren't irritating or phototoxic. I bought a non-phototoxic EO for my citrus flavoured one tho. That's really important. A lip...

    Lye Discoloring Liquid?

It won't be the heat that affects the tea/lye mixture. Think about the temperature of the water when you normally make tea :).

Gels. What can you do with them?

Ok so within the 30 seconds of posting this I just had one idea. How about a toner gel? I've made a liquid toner with orange flower water and witch hazel. Maybe I could turn that into a gel and make it easier to use? Could be interesting.. or a complete disaster. :)

Gels. What can you do with them?

I bought some xanthan gum the other week with the intention of experimenting with some gel recipes. I have a basic gel recipe to start with, but I cant seem to work out what to do with it. I also have some aloe vera gel that I bought, but its ready to use so it seems silly to dilute that with...

    Mixing Oxides and Ultramarines

I mix my oxide with a spoon full of soap mix while I am waiting for it to trace. I found that water was useless also the first time I tried it. I don't know about glycerin, I can't see it affecting the soap at all, but one of the more experienced soapers probably knows more than I do there.

    Lye

Food grade lye? Am I the only person who finds that rather strange?

New CP Soap & Sample Pics

Labels: (I'm in Aus so from the look of it the product numbers and websites are different, I've linked the US one for you to look at) I went to an office supply store and bought a packet of Avery Print or Write labels. They are small rectangles, 10/page, 350 labels per pack, approx. 1.5" x...

    Soap Pot weekend Oct 24-26

Yesterday I gave my sample group their first sample (a yellow clay mask with EOs) and at their suggestion created a community journal for them today to post their feedback and get updates and information from me when I find it. Friday night I packaged up all my new soap so its all pretty...

New CP Soap & Sample Pics

Yes they do have good layers. I took them and showed my sample girls yesterday and they loved them. They're not shrink wrapped, they're just wrapped in cling film. So there's still exposure to the elements. I'm just scared of losing the sweet orange EO :). The dry mix is a good idea. Tho I...

New CP Soap & Sample Pics

Thought I'd post a pic of my new soap batches along with my first sample batch that I'm starting up with my friends. The two multi-coloured ones were my first (and fairly unsuccessful) swirling effort. They've still got 3 weeks to cure, but I was feeling crafty last night so I thought...

    Preservative confusion...of course-

A salt scrub is going to require a lot less preservative than a sugar scrub. Bugs don't like a high salt environment, whereas they love sugar-water, its full of all the nutrients they need. I haven't made a salt scrub before but I can imagine that over 50% of it is pure rock salt. We don't...

    Preservative confusion...of course-

I don't trust any websites that report on X chemical being linked to cancer and also just happen to have this fantastic 'natural' product to sell to you at the end of it. That's very suspicious reporting in my eyes.

Help! Lotion bar hard as a rock.

This is why I only made a small batch. Thank goodness for that. I might recalculate what I currently have and and add some softer oils to smooth it out a bit. I don't want to throw out what I've made coz its so easy to melt down and fix. It smells really strongly of beeswax and cocoa butter...

    Multi-coloured soaps

I used the liquid benzoin. The only problem I had with it was that it was supplied in a bottle with a dripper cap.. which I had to pry out coz there's no way that stuff drips.
