Hi

I saw a whole tub of Zinc Oxide powder at an online Soap Supplies retailer. I was wondering if anyone know what the benefits were to adding Zinc Oxide to soap, I magine it has something to do with the UV inhibitor factor - so is it added to make he colours last longer? I know from sunscreen that it is very white as well, so maybe it is a whitener - if anyone knows what it does, I reckon this will be some good information to share!!!

Hugs guys

Didnt mean to sound so commanding and aggressive like - eeks!!!

I haven't heard of zinc oxide in soap , but who knows .Zinc oxide is mainly used in diaper rash creams and as a thickener for lotions and creams as far as I know. It has astringent qualities too.

UPDATED RESEARCH

I've been trying to research this more and I found a few links to soap that contain Zinc Oxide - I post them here for anyone who is interested:

This is from a company that supplies Zinc Oxide:

PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY

Zinc Oxide is mainly used in Zinc soap, ointment, dental inlays, food powders etc. Zinc Oxide forms an indispensable element of the production process of this industry.

COSMETICS

The optical and biochemical properties of Zinc Oxide and its derivatives impart special features to a variety of cosmetic preparations for care of the hair and skin. In powders and creams it protects the skin by absorbing the ultraviolet sunburn rays; in burn ointments it aids healing.

Simple salts of Zinc provide astringent and skin-conditioning properties to creams, while more complex salts furnish fungistatic properties which contribute to the effectiveness of deodorants, soaps, and antidandruff preparations.

So there it is if anyone is interested as I. I like the idea of a soap that will leave a layer of Sun Protection.....but I am trying to work out how it would not get rinsed off!

I think the people selling sun protection soap are full o' crap, tbh. Sure, you can put zinc oxide in soap, but I don't see how enough is going to remain on your skin through bathing to do one bit of good. I've used ZO paste as a sunblock and have a lotion with ZO in it, but neither of those are a wash-off product.

If someone has evidence otherwise, I'd be perfectly willing to see it and revise my opinion, but I think it's just another marketing scam aimed at people who don't know any better, just like the "weight loss soap" and "cancer soap" some people sell.

Tess

I think I agree with you.
I couldnt work out how it would stay on when all the other stuff would wash off, I read through all of those Zinc soap ads and I thought well if they are selling it and marketing it as that - there must be some other thing to it that I was missing.

I have to say while the idea sounds great - no more sunscreen slick - and a soap and sunscreen in one, I am still baffled how it would not rinse off!

I was shocked to read about the cancer soap and I am HORRIFIED that opportunists would make that into a market! How absolutely unscrupulous and insensitive and morally decrepit. I have had several family members pass on from cancer and it was truly painful to see them in their desperate search to grasp at anything to try and get rid of the cancer - people who prey on cancer patients should be punished by law I reckon!

Hi there! I put zinc oxide in my shampoo bar ( I use it on my bod too, but I like it for my hair) and the main thing that I noticed about it is that it leaves a ring around the tub. I like that it makes the soap just a teensy bit scratchy.
