Hi guys,

Beginner candle makers. Seem to have gotten most of the basics of the making process down pat but the issues arise when we go to burn a couple weeks later.

We just can’t seem to get the expected melt pool and despite keeping our wicks trimmed we always end up with black soot from the flame around 15-20 minutes into the burn. Also getting minimal to no scent throw at all. Have had some mushrooming previously aswell so all the signs of an oversized wick but have sized down a couple variants and still happening. Our concern is that if we go any smaller for the jars used we’ll have an even worse melt pool.

- Tried both HTP and CDN wicks.
- Using a soy/beeswax blend wax
- Taking care to follow all suggested guides for temperature pours and oil additions
- Have sized down twice and still occurring.
- Have gone between 5-8% fragrance loads in different tests.

We know it’s a trial error process but just wondering if anyone has any tips on where or what to try next? Even smaller wicks? Is it the wax? What should we test next?

As you are new please Introduce yourself in the Introduction Forum and tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into candlemaking.

There are a lot of variables in candlemaking, if you are more specific with your issues, such as pouring temps, size of container, % of FO, ambient temp, how much colour added if any etc, someone here might be able to help. You could also ring your wax supplier and ask for help.

Browsing back through the candle forum might give you some ideas from the problems other have encountered. Candle Making Forum | SoapMakingForum
