Where do you keep your ingredients

Was curious to know where all do you keep your ingredients at a cooler place or it is ok to keep them at a place which is humid? Does it impact their shelf life?
I live in India where in Summers the temperature can go up to 50 degree. a d the ingredients have been lying their for long. Was wondering if I should let them be or change .. ( Though dont know where :rolleyes::rolleyes:)

That's pretty hot. I start to melt & generally loose my cool at 47° (117°F).

Short answer:
Yes, it will impact their shelf life, particularly if the containers are gas & UV light permeable like some clear plastics.

Anything that deteriorates in high heat or temperature fluctuations, will go bad faster in a storage area like you describe. Light is another factor to consider in your storage area as well, as some ingredients also deteriorate faster in the presence of UV light. However there are some actions that may help prolong the life of your ingredients going forward. I don't know how long the ones you have already have been sitting around and if they are still viable, so that's something you will have to determine.

If you can install a refrigerator for storing your soaping oils, that will help. If you can't afford one, buy only as much oil as you can expect to use up within 2-3 months during the hotter months, depending on how quickly they go bad in your storage area. The same for other short-shelf-life ingredients.

Only purchasing oils with added antioxidants, or repackage and add antioxidants prior to storage. Make sure to repackage in containers that are not permeable to gas and UV light.

Perhaps the Health Department in India or another organization in your country has more information targeted toward your climate and long-term storage of Cooking oils to prolong shelf life. The links I included above are not from health departments, but from sites geared towards survivalists and/or emergency supply planning.

These next links suggest some pretty good reasons why we want to avoid oxidation of oils. Note that one discusses how the fatty acid profile is altered in oils as they oxidize, which for the soapmaker would indicate that the expected characteristics of the soap would be altered. Thanks Earlene for such detail info. There is no direct sunlight there and it is kept in the dark where thereis no direct sunlight. But as mentioned, I was lil worried .
I will surely change the place now.
