My husband asked this morning about the chemical reaction that takes place when lye and aluminum meet. I googled the specifics and found this nifty video which shows the reaction between the two. You get aluminum salts and hydrogen gas - the latter is highly flammable.

That is very scary! Looks like an accident waiting to happen, great information for those new to soap making and a reminder to the rest.
 
Okay I know I'm supposed to take this seriously but all I could think when I saw the flame above the boiling liquid was neat-o! Cool video. And I will be careful.
