I am new to soaping and so far in the last month I have made 2 dozen recipes that have all turned out beautifully. I thought I would try tp nix out palm oil. First I tried Substituting palm for lard; and yes ,I re-calculated. Well let's just say I have a nice pile of washing flakes' Then I tried a straight up simple lard recipe and it broke into pieces. I read that you can wait too long to cut so I thought that might have been the problem. Now I have tried a more complex lard recipe and I could not get it to trace. What is up with lard?

That's very strange. In my experience, lard is a very well behaved oil. It's pretty much the perfect balance of tracing not too fast and not too slow, and hardening not too fast and not too slow. Can you post the recipes? Also, what brand of lard are you using?
