One of my batches from yesterday turned out lye heavy. Not wanting to waste it (and really not in the mood for a rebatching attempt), I grated it up and used a quarter cup in my washing machine with some clothes. The clothes are nice and fresh, but I was thinking should I have used a vinegar rinse to neutralize the lye? Or do you think the water from the rinse cycle would be enough?

Vinegar does neutralize lye, so I suppose that would work. I use white vinegar as a rinse agent even though I use detergent to wash my laundry. It leaves my clothes nice and soft by neutralizing the minerals, thereby softening the water. It's supposed to help your machine last longer, too. HTH

ps the vinegar smell disappears when the clothes are dried.
